Two boats race upstream in extremely close quarters; a third follows a few minutes behind. The river is filled with ice and slush. The boats are too distant to recognize, but it is a treat to see so many of them, especially so late in the season. This makes five so far in the past hour. The lead boat has been making for midchannel from her earlier position much closer to the Detroit shore. She just noses ahead of the second boat.
