Replace Lowrance sonar - Montauk 170
I have the original Lowrance sonar that came with my 2003 Boston Whaler Montauk 170. Is it difficult to replace including wiring running through the hull? I am having some problems with the Lowrance getting scrambled readings after about two hours of boating and turning it off and on did not fix the...

Center console boat with T-Top around 20 feet
Hi fellow Whaler fans. I am thinking about getting a second boat and wondered if anyone had any experience with a Sea Pro or Sea Fox around the 20-foot. I am keeping my Montauk 170 and would never part with that.
Thanks,
Dan

Re: Risk of Using Old Polyethylene Fuel Tank
Hi Jim: I was curious based on what the mechanic said, especially when he was not trying to sell me a new gas tank. The next time I see the mechanic, I will get the theory behind his thoughts. However, I have polyethylene tanks in the 15 year old range I use for my lawn mowers and never had any prob...

Risk of Using Old Polyethylene Fuel Tank
What are everyone's thoughts [about the risk of using an old polyethylene fuel tank? I am not sure what risk there would--especially when using non-ethanol gasoline. An [unidentified] marine mechanic told me that old fuel tanks should be replaced after [an unspecified number of] years. BACKSTORY: I ...

The PATE was 30" long x 19" deep x 14" high. Looks like the Moeller 22 gallon should be fine.

Re: 170 MONTAUK Re-power with Yahama F90
Hey Peter: I sold my 2003 Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE and upgraded to a 2018 Yamaha F90. The Mercury ran rich, was tough on spark plugs, and the four carburetors needed to be synchronized occassionally. I was going to try a hotter plug but decided not to. —Dan

PATE Fuel Tank Replacement
Hi fellow boaters.
I need to replace a PATE 27-gallon on-deck fuel tank used on a 2003 170 Montauk. What will be a good substitute?
Will a Moeller 22-gallon tank (UPC739729011454) slide in without any modifications or lifting the seat on a 2003 170 Montauk?
Thanks,
Danny

Re: Prop - 2018 Yahama 90HP 4-stroke Montauk
Just for your information, the original motor was a Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE which came with a Mercury 13x18 Vengeance propeller. This propeller had a lot of low end torque but I thought engine speed or RPM on the top end were more than I felt comfortable with in the over-40 MPH boat speed range. I jus...

170 MONTAUK Re-power with Yahama F90
Hi fellow members. I just upgraded the engine on a 2003 170 MONTAUK to a new Yamaha F90. I am not sure what size propeller to install. I plan to use a stainless steel propeller with a pitch that is good for all-round use, including pulling a small float or tubing. Any input would be greatly apprecia...

Re: Montauk 170 Re-power Choice
Usually when a timing belt in a car engine breaks, the valves may get bent and destroy the motor. Not sure what damage would occur if a timing belt in an outboard breaks.

Re: Montauk 170 Re-power Choice
I noticed the 90HP Suzuki has a timing chain as opposed to a timing belt. Although I would prefer a chain drive over a belt drive, I never had a belt break before or go out of adjustment. May not be a significant difference. Thanks--Danny

Re: Montauk 170 Re-power Choice
Danny--there certainly are regional preferences for engines and the dealer representation either causes or reflects that. I was in North Carolina a few years ago and every black engine I saw on the water was a Suzuki. I can understand how a Mercury dealer could be scarce in your area. Hey Jim: What...

Re: Montauk 170 Re-power Choice
Each of the major outboard manufacturers has a decent, reliable 90-HP engine. For most buyers it comes down to: --price --weight --features (i.e. self winterization) --instrument options (networking, digital gauges etc) --local dealer service Dealers will give you a single number (like $12,132) wit...

Re: Montauk 170 Re-power Choice
I suspect the original engine on a c.2003 170 MONTAUK would be a Mercury. Have you considered a new Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE as a replacement? Hi Jim: I did consider a Mercury a while back but I could not find a dealer near Charlotte NC that does engine upgrades. The reason to upgrade was to get a fue...

Montauk 170 Re-power Choice
Hello again everyone. I am in the process of buying a new 90-HP four-stroke-power-cycle engine to install on my 2003 Montauk 170. I am thinking about a Yamaha. Some dealers are pushing a Suzuki or a Honda. What are your thoughts? I am located near Charlotte NC so dealer selection may be a factor. Th...

Jim: I have the Montauk 170 dated 2003 and it is like new since it sits in my garage most of the time. I will do that math and see if it is worth switching brands. If it is less than $1,000, I may go with the Yamaha. thanks again.

Re: 2003 170 Montauk Re-power with Four-stroke-cycle Engine
Jim: I was leaning towards Yahama due to authorized dealers being in driving distance from Charlotte. I have a 2010 Yamaha 70hp 4 stroke on my pontoon boat and it appears much smaller and is very quiet compared to my Mercury 90hp 4-stroke. Then I wonder if the 100 less pounds would make it less dura...

2003 170 Montauk Re-power with Four-stroke-cycle Engine
Hi fellow boaters. I am thinking about re-powering my 2003 Montauk that currently has a Mercury 90-HP FOURSTROKE with carburetors. I would like to go to a fuel injected version. Not sure if I should stay with a Mercury or switch to a Yamaha. I was thinking about the Yamaha 70-HP since it is around 1...
