1978 SPORT 15 has Loose Mechanical Steering
The helm steering on my 1978 15 Sport is apparently original: stainless wheel and black metal bezel. The steering wheel has about 10-percent play when moving it left to right, and at certain engine speeds, it rattles if not being held. Is there any adjustment point on the steering assembly? It is mo...

Re: Converting Sport 15 to Center Console
That's a really nice solution! If I can find a reasonably priced console, I would also run the controls and electrical down the center like you did. Todd does make some nice consoles. Is the darker assembly holding the steering, etc. part of the Todd console, or an addition?

Converting Sport 15 to Center Console
Much as I love my 1978 15 Sport, at my age of 74, I'm finding my back (military disability) often cannot take the posture at the helm. (Raising the existing thwart seat is not near enough) It's an unmodified standard model, with the wraparound rail at the helm seat, and no front rails. I've owned 2 ...

Re: 2001 16 DAUNTLESS Re-power
My former 2001 16 Dauntless came to me used with a 90 Honda. After the first outing, I installed a hydrofoil, which improved things significantly. Next, I limited my fuel to less than half a tank - which reduced the stern "squat" quite a bit. Still had to have my son and a friend sit on th...

Thanks, Jim for corroborating my data. I agree with your views on the 15: in my opinion, it's the very best of designs.

Re: 13-footer Steering Cable Measurement, Vendors
I would check with Sue Lodel at Twin Cities Marine for the Whaler specs for the steering cable. Teleflex supplies a very good replacement. Mine was either 8 or 9 feet, I believe. I ordered the longer one because I moved the console forward about 9 inches...

Re: 1978 SPORT 15 with 40-HP
Just ran my Whaler up and used my GPS to calculate. With 6 gallons of fuel, standard battery, my son and I both at 205 lbs: GPS showed 34.7 mph, and I trimmed up a little, and gained a bit more speed, but didn't record the GPS. I'm eminently satisfied with this setup.

Re: Early Progress on my 15 Sport Restoration
Thanks for the compliments. I guess I'm too fussy. That hatch color is way off by my standards. I'm going to get some mahogany boards from my supplier, and fabricate a new hatch cover with a better color match. Alternatively and far less expensive, I will first try a new piece of mahogany plywood an...

Maiden Voyage/ Shakedown
Update on my Sport 15: Splashed her yesterday, having finished all the woodwork, and installed the controls and had all the carbs rebuilt and adjusted. Forgot the GPS, but with the 40 4-stroke and 10 x 14 pitch prop, she is plenty fast enough for me. Best estimate 28 to 35 mph with 2 adults aboard. ...

Re: 15-foot Models
I've had a standard Sport15 with side rails and added lowered front rails, a commercial sport (forgot the model name) 15 with a side console, side and front rails, A center console 15 CC with only side rails, and now have a standard 1978 Sport 15 with the optional wraparound helm seat with rails aro...

Re: Screw Heads
There may have been some few exceptions, but in all 10 Whalers I have owned, the screws were always Philipps head. 'm going with those.

Screw Heads
I'm disassembling my 1978 Sport 15 boat's wood to refinish it. The stainless screws I'm taking out are all slotted type screws. My other renovations had Philipps head screws. Which type is original? I much prefer the Philipps type, but if the originals were slotted, I want to reuse them.

Re: Towing with a Subaru Outback
I towed my 2001 Dauntless 16 with my 2005 [Subaru] Impreza Sport--the Little Outback. Towed it for more than three years. Never once felt stopping was anything out of the ordinary. Granted, it's no dragster, but the tow rating in 2005 per my dealer was 3,700-lbs. Seems a bit much, and the dealer did...

Re: Early Progress on my 15 Sport Restoration
Thanks for the encouragement. It sounds like yours was a real challenge. One unusual thing: the sanded seats seem to be of two different hues - but both are original. One is purple-ish, and the other looks more like raw wood. I may have to sand a bit more. Finally located a set of controls, but have...

Early Progress on my 15 Sport Restoration
Here are a couple photos showing the progress on the Sport 15 [with seat back option]. The seats have been coarse sanded to remove the old finish. An example of the condition in which I bought the boat shows the console in original shape. I can't understand why some folks let their boat deteriorate ...

Re: 1978 SPORT 15 with 40-HP
I agree with the last post. I've had 3 15's: a basic hull, a Center Console, and now the Sport with the wrraparound seat setup. I've had 8 Whalers before this in my life, and this is hands down my favorite. At age 73, this is my ultimate and last Whaler. I am just getting into flyfishing, and the bo...

Re: 1978 SPORT 15 with 40-HP
Thanks. It's just about what I figured. I am running a 14-pitch aluminum 3-bladed propeller recommended apparently based on the boat specifications. I'll be happy with that level of performance. I'll post back the actual data when I get her in the water. I'm still hunting for some used controls.

1978 SPORT 15 with 40-HP
My 1978 Sport 15 has the wrap-around seating and rail configuration. I plan to install a 2000 Mercury 40-HP FOURSTROKE engine with carburetors. I boat on a rather small lake, and have no compulsion for speed. What can I expect for full-throttle performance with two adults and little else aboard?

Finally found my Whaler
Well, fellas, I’ve been away for a couple years – and whaler-less. My search has ended today, and I FINALLY found my ideal Whaler. It’s a 1978 15 Whaler Sport. It’s almost a “barn find” … Two owners, no modifications to hull or interior, no holes, no scrapes, no spider cracks or hull damage at all, ...
