Re: 150 MONTAUK v. 16 DAUNTLESS

I should note that my Dauntless has the original Mercury 90-HP two-stroke-power-cycle three-cylinder classic engine. I would prefer a 115-HP engine, but with a four-bladed stainless propeller the 90-HP performance is good. Time to plane--my only complaint with the boat--was much improved going to th...

Re: 150 MONTAUK v. 16 DAUNTLESS

I own a Dauntless 16 and my sister has a 150 Montauk. I am very familiar with both boats. The Dauntless has a superior ride, more room, a built-in fuel tank, and much more seating. For fishing, the walk space along side the console is more generous. I believe it is a superior boat. The Montauk is in...

Re: A Boat Market Slow Down

Fuel costs are not even close to the top of my boating expense list, and won’t keep me off the water. I suspect many folks will continue to enjoy their boats, but take shorter trips and boat closer to their home ports to save a bit of money. In terms of the buying frenzy, I think it will slowly tape...

If you are going through the trouble to remove the fuel tank deck cover on a 1983 22-foot hull, you should just plan on replacing the tank. [A 38-year-old aluminum fuel tank] is long past its service life. There is no way to remove the tank without cutting away the foam. The tank is literally bonded...

Your second idea is a good one, often the trailer is worth more than the boat it is under. The problem is getting rid of a boat that is sitting on it. A cover is the best solution, but I don't understand why it is not self-bailing, save for the forward sump. My 1989 Outrage 22 cuddy has a pair of small sumps in the aft corners, each connected to the rigging tunnels. With the plugs out, these will self bail in all conditions, and water will never b...

I took a close look at a 210 Montauk at Nauset Marine this summer. It's a big boat, uncluttered with space eating furniture, and I was impressed with the clean, open layout of the boat. A very easy and safe way to lift the outboard is using an automotive engine hoist rented from your local rental yard. Re: "1-Foot-itis" Dauntless 15 v. Dauntless 16

I agree with all the other positive comments on the Dauntless 16. It is a much more substantial boat than the 15, and handles nasty chop as well as any boat that size. While I agree the boat would perform better with a 115 than a 90, the 90 hp Mercury 2-stroke moves it along just fine. We routinely ...

I towed my Montauk with a Jeep Wrangler, and now tow my Dauntless 16 with the same rig. The chock on a rope is really great, and does the job of keeping the tow vehicle out of the water.
