Re: 2001 16 DAUNTLESS: Sell or Re-power

Thanks for everything, I decided on selling the Dauntless... hope I don't regret this. As seen in my recent post on the GAM I'm currently looking at a 04 Nantucket

Re: Assessing 2004 190 NANTUCKET

jimh--I agree with your philosophy with regard to OptiMax: grind it out as long as possible and then re-power.

I hate buying boats. I'm stuck around the $18,000 price range. I am in the New england Area. I am trying to move up from my Dauntless and love the size and feel of this 19.

Re: Assessing 2004 190 NANTUCKET

Thanks I have just contacted a surveyor to ask about cost. Now I'm paranoid. The boat was used lightly but sits on a mooring and clearly is in need of some TLC by my standards. I've also read about a potential defect in the livewell drain with the potential for water seeping into the foam. Can anyon...

Assessing 2004 190 NANTUCKET

I am looking at a 2004 Nantucket with a 2004 Mercury 150 OptiMax with 300 hours. I am having a Mercury mechanic do a evaluation [of the OptiMax] as I'm a little uneasy with this engine and its complexity. The mechanic, however, believes most of the main problems with OptiMax engines had cleaned up b...

Re: 2001 16 DAUNTLESS: Sell or Re-power

Great points Bob, it's a 2001 90 Merc 2 stroke... again I have zero indications that the motor is running poorly. I use it frequently. I know literally zero about props and pitch I'm still torn on wether to sell or hold onto it. If it stays I will certainly start with addressing the prop. And then m...

Re: Hull Cleaning

My 16 Dauntless stays on a mooring in Boston harbor, along with 12-15 other whalers. I just hauled my boat due to staining above the water line. The bottom is painted. I used a product called on/off hull cleaner, picked it up at west marine. Outstanding results. Easy to use and works with in seconds...

Re: 2001 16 DAUNTLESS: Sell or Re-power

Boat seems to run flawless, motor positioning may be a start. 5 holes, mine is second from the top. So between motor positioning and prop replacement perhaps I can pick up more speed and rpm?

Re: 2001 16 DAUNTLESS: Sell or Re-power

The boat bas bottom paint and has been in the water since early May. I use it frequently, every three or fours days. But I'm certain it's due for a haul out and cleaning. Top speed today was 25-MPH and engine maximum was 5,000-RPM. A nearby dealer has a leftover 115 with a 20-inch shaft. Installed h...

Re: 2001 16 DAUNTLESS: Sell or Re-power

All great points, very appreciated. I agree if I went the repower route. I'd be holding onto the boat for a long time. Can anyone tell me, what size shaft I'd need? Off season if I hold onto the boat I will take a closer look at the mounting and potential prop change. As for emissions it's not a con...

2001 16 DAUNTLESS: Sell or Re-power

I am really struggling with selling my 2001 16 Dauntless with a Mercury 90. For the most part it serves my needs--especially when I'm solo--and it is a fun little boat. Having said that I would love to move into a used 18 or 20 Outrage--older hull would be fine--more space for the occasional family ...

2001 16 Dauntless. Fuel gauge stuck on Full

Afternoon, looking for some advice on my fuel gauge and how to possibly trouble shoot it. It had been acting up a bit, would sometimes pin at full... then would go back to working properly. If I shut the boat off, the needle returns to E, once the boat is powered on it pins at full again and has sta...

2001 160 Dauntless Lift Eyes

Did a 2001 [160] Dauntless come with hoisting eyes? I am the only Dauntless owner at my club. Most guys with smaller Outrages use a rope system through eye-holes to hoist. This is especially helpful when painting the bottom. Thanks for any information.

exactly right Jim, I saw the drain plug in the locker and became concerned. Perhaps the previous owner used it for another reason. Thanks for your response!

Re: DAUNTLESS 16 Anchor Locker Drain Plug

Thanks guys, [the purpose of installation of a plug into the anchor locker drain] seems more like if I want to keep water in, for some reason. Perhaps [the anchor locker] can be used as a fish locker or extra cooler.

DAUNTLESS 16 Anchor Locker Drain Plug

Yesterday [September 10, 2016] I noticed that inside the anchor storage [locker on a Boston Whaler DAUNTLESS 16 boat of unspecified model year] there is a drain plug in the [deck]. The plug was out. My Boston Whaler DAUNTLESS 16 has been moored and in the water for weeks. Should I put the plug back ...

DAUNTLESS 16 Corroded Fuel Tank Vent

Has anyone replaced the fuel tank vent on the port side of the freeboard on a Dauntless 16?

[The fuel tank vent] has heavy corrosion. I'm just afraid to play around with it in case it snaps off.

Any idea if there's threads inside?

Thanks in advance.

2001 16 DAUNTLESS Re-power

I may [re-power a 2001 Boston Whaler DAUNTLESS 16 boat] over the winter. What would you do to re-power [a 2001 Boston Whaler DAUNTLESS 16] boat? Why? Keep in mind it has a 2001 Mercury 90. I'd like to go to the max 115-HP. A local dealer said they would give me [money] for my 90. Thanks in advance.

I've read a lot about the power.

How do you feel about the 90 on yours?

What type of speed are you getting?

Re: 2001 16 Dauntless

Thanks guys for the intel, in a perfect world I would be able to get into a 18 with decent power. This boat was a deal I could not turn down, even if I don't keep it and end up selling after the season. I boat in Boston harbor. On very rare occasion I will make a short run offshore--but only on good...

Re: 2001 16 Dauntless

Thank you Butch! Yes I have come across several posts regarding the power. My 17 mako had the same concern, I had a 90 but wanted a 115. That said given the price of this dauntless I had to decide. Perhaps the future will hold a re-power.
