Re: Evinrude 140-HP Misfire
Glad to hear it was only a spark plug. Cheap fix. Make sure all of your plugs are gaped correctly. You might consider adding some fuel system cleaner when you fill the tank, or having the carbs cleaned. Might help in the future to avoid fouling plugs. When I run my 2 strokes just before I get back t...

Re: Evinrude 140-HP Misfire
What is "common"? More than half of all engines? It is common for 22 year old engines to need service. Are you trying to say the all or the majority have lost compression? No. Common would be a problem that is not unheard of, or not UNCOMMON. I'm not sure why you think that means half of ...

Re: Evinrude 140-HP Misfire
...a bad cylinder...is a common failure with V4 and V6 two-stroke-power-cycle engines. Loss of a cylinder due to bad compression is not really common in two-stroke-power-cycle outboard engines. The vast majority of them never have this problem. Before agonizing needlessly about the loss of compress...

Re: Evinrude 140HP 1994 Miss
In that case you'll probably be looking at a bad cylinder. If the compression test comes back good then it most likely is an easy fix. However, the discolored spark plug and sudden loss of performance is usually an indication of a bad cylinder. This is a common failure with V4 and V6 two-stroke-powe...

Re: Evinrude 140-HP Misfire
A compression check can definitely tell you if there is a problem with a cylinder. Depending on the outboard, 2- or 4-stroke, how hard it was run, year it was built, condition of bearings, hours, etc., the compression will be varied. A good-running two-stroke looper should be around 100 to 130-PSI--...

Repainting Entire Boat 13' 1972
Looking for any insight from someone who has already taken on this project: The paint is relatively expensive, and figuring I'll never paint anything else in Boston Whaler Blue (or at least not in the lifespan of a can of paint on the shelf) how much did you actually use on the inner hull? I see som...

Re: 1972 13-footer: Hull Drains
Replacement of the hull drains is described in the FAQ. See Q12: How Are Drain Tubes Replaced? http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/FAQ/#Q12 The answers in the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS section have been carefully researched. Do not confuse their terse language for a lack of information. I k...

Re: 1972 13-footer: Hull Drains; Wood Location; Hull Weight; Bow Eye
[Explains that to replace the "stupid thru-hull bow eye" that was used on a Boston Whaler 13-foot boat he will use] a regular stainless U-bolt type eye such [as used] on every other boat [and will] cut the threads off so the nuts don't pose a cut hazard. The current one lends itself to be ...

Re: 1972 13' Whaler Question
Thanks dg22, that was very helpful. I now understand how little wood there is in the hull, and will only plan to replace the transom section. When I do this I'll bring it up all the way to flush with the rest of the transom. Thank you!

1972 13-footer: Hull Drains; Wood Location; Hull Weight; Bow Eye
I'll start with an introduction. My name is Rob, I am from Cape Cod, and I work in the offshore oil industry. Some of you probably know me from THT, DEBF, and Red Regulator. I have a 26 Regulator, a 19' Seaway project, and now a 13-foot Boston Whaler semi-project boat. I recently picked up a 13-foot...
