Re: 170 Montauk Engine Mounting Height Change

jimh--The "myriad of improvements" are just reports by other Boston Whaler boat owners on their experience of raising the engines [resulting in] quicker planing, lower speed planing, lower fuel usage, easier steering, higher top speed, more engine trim options, etc. Apologies if the word m...

Re: 170 Montauk Engine Mounting Height Change

Thanks Phil, just the affirmation I'm after. I will get some test figures next time out - whether that is pre or post lifting the engine.

Re: 170 Montauk Engine Mounting Height Change

My goal is to have some of the myriad of improvements which I read for raising engines further than their original positions, at least on the classic hulls. I'm hoping the Montauk 170 responds in the same way. Maybe 1 more hole is a more sensible place to be if there isn't further precedent.

170 Montauk Engine Mounting Height Change

I have a 2005 170 Montauk 170 fitted with a Mercury 90-HP FOURSTROKE carburetor engine mounted one-hole-up and running a VENGEANCE 18-pitch propeller. This 170 MONTAUK has the optional stern seat—which I am considering removing—and a Yamaha 4-HP auxiliary engine, so the boat is stern heavy. Also, I ...

Re: Life with my Carburetor Mercury-Yamaha FourStroke (continued)

Thanks Phil, my wording was a bit rubbish. The cable steering system Is free and working smoothly. The concern I have is with then engine's own swivel bracket. I add quicksilver fuel treatment to each tank of fuel, and I hope this keeps the engine running well. Fortunately I have carburetor tear-dow...

Re: Life with my Carburetor Mercury-Yamaha FourStroke (continued)

Nice to find a thread on the Mercaha 90 - i've recently acquired one on the back of a 2005 Montauk 170 i've purchased in the UK. I bought the boat with the engine untested, perhaps unwisely with the hours I have/will spend on it. I'm familiar with the Yamaha 100hp after owning one a few years ago wh...

Gunwale Damage Repair

My boat started life as a 19' SENTRY. When its aluminium top was removed so was some of the material on the gunwales in patches all the way around the hull. gunwaleDamage.jpg How can damage to a Unibond hull at the gunwale be repaired? Two more images showing very similar damage can be seen by visit...

Re: Using Teak or Faux Teak to Re-Cover Deck

I believe you commented on that photo in my Pinterest... Ah, yes that was probably me. Did you end up doing your hull with the chinese stuff? How is the deck on your friend's boat holding up? Thanks for the pictures, i'm intending on giving it a go as there isn't much i can do with my deck to impro...

Re: 2000 Mercury V6 135-HP: Water Spray from Pre-mix Tank pressure line - mercury 135

Thanks. I'm not as familiar with 2 stroke outboards as I could be, is there any likely way water can get into the crankcase?

Re: Guardian 18 - deck damage covering with faux teak

The boat was used as some form of floating pontoon and wasn't in a great state. The extra hatches are now unnecessary so i will cover those and template the originals. I found this image of a 13' classic with the permateak variation which looks great - just wondering if there's any [Boston Whaler OU...

Using Teak or Faux Teak to Re-Cover Deck

I have a 1990 Guardian which had a very rough life before i acquired it last year. The deck has had new hatches cut in and many screw holes dotted around, along with patches of wear and tear. Due to the patterned nature of the deck i would struggle to repair it without it looking awful. This has lea...

2000 Mercury V6 135-HP: Water Spray from Oil Tank Pressure Line

Hi everyone. I've recently bought a 2000 Mercury 135HP V6 2.5 (single piece cover) and I'm doing a bit of digging before getting the boat in the water. The alarm was sounding continuously as soon as the ignition was switched on, but I fixed that by loosening the engine oil tank until oil flowed out ...

Re: Guardian 18 Propeller Ventilation

I have ordered the vent covers , so I will report back if they fix the concern. I will also get a tachometer to start to assess my very low top speed.

Re: Guardian 18 Propeller Ventilation

Thanks, again. I've had a look at my prop and it appears all of the vent holes are missing their bungs totally. Probably the cause of the ventilation! I'll order some and we can see.

The top speed would be unaffected by these. Am I right?

Re: Guardian 18 Propeller Ventilation

Thank you for the replies! The speed was measured with GPS. There is a fish finder transducer on the transom, however it is very small, I will remove it and re test . I wasn't aware of the slots in the laser props, I'll check out what configuration I have going. I will try and get hold of a tacho an...

Guardian 18 Propeller Ventilation

Hi everyone, I am a new member over in the United Kingdom. I picked up a c.1990 Guardian 18 hull last year and spent a bit of time putting a few bits on so that i could use it--it has been abused! I'm using a Mercury or Mariner 150 V6 two-stroke with a LASER II 19-pitch propeller. I've finally got i...
