Field Report: 2016 Evinrude E-TEC 90 Engine

In August of 2016--almost eight years ago--I purchased an Evinrude E-TEC 90-NP engine to re-power my 1989 MONTAUK 17 boat. Since then, I have followed the three-year maintenance schedule, and I have also winterized the engine every year [presumably using the Evinrude E-TEC unique auto-winterizing fu...

Re: 1985 MONTAUK 17: Preventing Water Overflowing Transom

The rigs that walleye anglers have on the stern of their boats [that are intended to prevent waves coming over the transom] are called Wave Walkers. A Google search [using the search term “wave walker”] will find [links that may] reveal how they are constructed. On a 1989 MONTAUK 17 I constructed a ...

Re: Endorsement of CARVER Boat Cover

Thanks for the tip on towing with the cover. That will save me an embarrassing moment or two on the highway. Caver did not describe the material as Sunbrella but as “Premium 100% Marine Acrylic”. “100% solution dyed acrylic”. It was recommended over the Sundura because the acrylic is suppose to be b...

Endorsement of CARVER Boat Cover

I was looking for a cover for boat cover for [a c.1989 MONTAUK 17--always mention the year, the model, and the length in your post.] After reader comments in the forum, I bought a CARVER boat cover. The choices for the fabric for the cover were marine acrylic--the most expensive--and SUNDURA (about ...

Evinrude 2016 E-TEC 90-HP Six-year Check Up

My 2016 Evinrude [E-TEC 90-HP engine] has its six-year maintenance interval coming up. Q1: on a 2016 Evinrude E-TEC 90-HP engine, what shop the shop check on the six-year maintenance interval? Thanks for any ideas on [what the shop should check on my engine at its six-year maintenance service]. This...

Cleaning Black Grain in Teak

What is a good way to remove black lines from the grain of teak?

BACK STORY.
My 1989 Montauk 17 has been covered since November 2021. I have started cleaning the usual gunk that develops during layup in a rainy area. Most of it comes off with boat soap on a brush. I oil the teak.

Re: Safety Lanyard Poll

I don’t use a safety lanyard while trolling with my 1989 MONTAUK 17 boat. I do wear a vest at all times. ANECDOTAL INCIDENT I pulled out a fellow from the Columbia River who had a vest on but no lanyard. His steering had snapped and he went sailing out of his boat. The boat was doing a large circle ...

Re: Pulling new cables in rigging tunnel

Try running a fish tape from the access hole under the center counsel to the stern access point. Connect your cable and try pulling it through. I’ve done this with my Montauk and it works. I apologize If I’ve stated the obvious. A fish tape is available at Lowe’s or Home Depot. A fish tape a flat [s...

Re: Montauk 17: Suzuki DF90 or E-TEC 90

I put a Evinrude E-TEC 90 on my [1989] Montauk [17] in 2016 after the original Mercury 100 lost one of its four cylinders. I’ve just done the three-year maintenance on the E-TEC 90, and I am really pleased with the engine. The weight convinced me to go with the E-TEC. The E-TEC 90 has run flawlessly...

Re: Wood Trim on MONTAUK console

I use West Marine Teak oil. Seems like it works well. Eventually the oil will build up on the teak and you will have to clean the old built up old oil.
I just redid some of the wood after taking the boat out of storage.
