I confirm the speed was measured by GPS so the speed was speed-over-ground or SOG. The speed was measured at 37-MPH in one direction and 36-MPH in the other direction.

I will retest with just myself onboard and post new baseline results.

Just to note, my initial article mentioned motor mounted two holes up but this was a mistake; the engine is only one hole up.

[The TOHATSU 90-HP on the 1979 MONTAUK 17] is mounted on- hole "up". I figured [this mounting height] would be ok.

To raise [the engine mounting] another one- hole or two-holes higher would not be difficult.

What is the general consensus [on engine mounting height]?

Thanks for everyone's input. I am very reluctant to drill holes to mount an auxiliary bracket. I think a rubber transom pad (shown below) looks like the best option.

Well turns out you cant get PVC pipe in the UK and its all now ABS at least from hardware/plumbing merchants.

I think I am going to opt for the readily available 12" rod holders and mount of some teak racks as per OEM, does this cause a problem with mounting the OEM cushions?

The tubing I have been trying to flare actually turns out to be ABS and not PVC. I believe ABS has a much higher melting temperature. I will get some PVC tubing and try again.

Thanks guys. I did try that exact technique, but I found the flare to be uneven all the way around.

[The demonstration on youTube] made [forming heated PVC] look easy. I will try again, with some sort of guide on top of the bottle neck so that the PVC tube slides down evenly.

I use a 72-quart Marine Igloo (which I picked up used), and I bought a cushion from Andersons. That works fine for me. [There is] just enough space for my two kids to sit up front on either side of the crook.

Sorry to Hijack, however I was offered a similar motor and it was oil injection (mixing) with a built-in oil tank and had the oil level visible from the cowling. I often wondered why don't these motors burn cylinders as surely at low speed, no fuel equals no lubrication to these deactivated cylinders.
