Re: Towing 170 Montauk with Ford Escape
I'd suggest hydraulic surge brakes on the trailer to increase safety. We tow ours with a Toyota Tundra and Subaru Outback. Especially with the lighter Subaru or if you need to suddenly stop, the brakes are a benefit. The best configuration for this type setup is to have the vehicle reverse lights wi...

Re: Fuel Tank Capacity of 190 and 170 MONTAUK
I have a Montauk 170 with a 22 gallon tank. http://www.easternmarine.com/moeller-22-gal-boston-whaler-above-deck-fuel-tank-031626br Unless you plan on only frequent short trips, I'd recommended it for that boat. It is more convenient and gives the option of greater ranges without needing to deal wit...

Re: 2008 Montauk 170 Re-power
The restriction or limitation on the power output from the 2.1-liter displacement engine in the 90-FOURSTROKE model is probably intentional in order that the 90-HP version have less power output that the 115 ProXS version using the same 2.1-liter block. Yes, this is definitely a good part of it. Th...

A little different boat, but I have split bow rails on a Montauk 170 and think they are great. It makes getting over the bow off a trailer, beach, etc. very easy.

This (VesselView) may be another option for a gateway. I used the VesselView 4 with a different Mercury engine and it provides a gateway function between SmartCraft and a NMEA 2000 network.

I talked to Mercury Support today March 29, 2016 and while the tech said they could not consult on modifications to engines, there was more involved than just the ECM in the differences between the engines. I said CAM shaft differences not just part number differences. I got an uhuh, (YES) response...

I've been told that my Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE BASED ON 2.1-LITER won't run properly without the new EPA venting do-hicky as found on the standard 6 gallon fuel tanks. Does this new vent come standard on the Moeller tank? No extra vent came with the Moeller EPA rated tank. I used the venting do-hicky...

This is a nice engine and great improvements over the previous. As far as I know, it has been out for a while. A bit over a year now. The 75-HP, 90-HP, and 115-HP use the same 2.1 L displacement block. There are only minor differences among the three, such as air restriction, cam, and ECU programming.

Considering the EPA regulations that prohibit the tampering with any part of a regulated engine that can affect exhaust gas emission, it seems possible that you might not even be able to buy an ECM without demonstrating that you had the appropriate model engine for its use. Never tried such a thing...

It is a Montauk 170 with a 90 HP Mercury 2.1L.
It has a Vengeance 13-1/8" x 16" prop.
42 mph is the fastest I have seen (GPS). I didn't note the RPM, but will next time I have a chance.

John - We also skied barefoot on the river when kids, but not competitively. Then got too worried about hitting a stick and started wearing tennis shoes. Much easier, but never did learn how to stop gracefully! Phil - I'll check RPMs next time out, but do think it was likely in the 5700-5800 range.

Yes, I was posing partly as a rhetorical question. I agree it would be very unlikely a manufacturer would give their rating process.
I was curious on this boat if others here see reasons for the limit other than the obvious marketing aspect.

Re: 170 MONTAUK Re-power with 115-HP Mercury Command Thrust
I'm currently re-powering a 2004 Montauk 170. I was leaning towards the Mercury 115 FOURSTROKE Command Thrust since it is the same footprint as the 90. Re: 170 MONTAUK Re-power with 115-HP Mercury Command Thrust
When I was looking at motors for the same boat, it seems that the recommendations were that is was best not to use the command thrust with it. That was since it was intended for heavier, or pontoon boats with its gear ratio. May be worth checking into unless you got different recommendations.

I do remove the chartplotter for security often. It gets stored in a Pelican model 1450 case for protection.

Both posts above have good points about using the top of the console for storage. Mine has nothing there now and definitely things will slide around.

Good points!
I did read on the old forum a while back and lots of great information there. I agree I think [a Boston Whaler 170 MONTAUK boat] would handle [a Mercury 115-HP FOURSTROKE engine] fine, but the legal part seems pretty undefined from what I could find.
Thanks

I agree and like that option of swapping the motor as well. I'm guessing that might cost quite a bit, but maybe reasonable compared to the cost and added risk of modifying. I use a compound miter saw more often than a table saw, but the first project you have in mind might affect which you would get first. A table saw is much better for ripping, especially long pieces. If I were to buy a compound miter saw again, I'd stick with a 12" blade and the sliding type pow...

I agree, that would be too easy. It looks like the parts would be ~$600 to buy the 115 HP version of the ECM and cam. Looking closely at the parts diagrams, it appears more than the ECM would be needed to convert a 90 into a 115. There are different air restrictor and camshaft part numbers. I'm guessing the cam is actually different having unique part numbers.
