I will look at the Mantus - I didn't see they had such a small model available!

Re: Small Second Anchor

Thanks very much everyone! I really appreciate the suggestions. In addition to your suggestions I looked at one of the small Lewmar claw anchors at West Marine this weekend. Pretty nice, but I think it will be too awkward to fit in the locker. I think I am going to give the Guardian 2.5 pound anchor...

Re: Safety Lanyard Poll

Seldom, unfortunately. By myself and outside of a harbor or bay primarily. Unfortunately, that thinking suggests I am trying to protect myself but not so much anyone else. I am going to move to the "by myself and on a plane" rule. Of course I should probably do better, but that is very rea...

Small Second Anchor

I'm looking for a second anchor for my 2004 Montauk 170. When I purchased the boat a few years ago I bought a Fortress FX-7 for it's low weight, for its resistance to corrosion, and because it had enough holding power for a significantly larger boat. I keep this on a 150' rode for emergencies (I wou...

Re: More Consolidation: NAVICO and C-MAP Merge

I was recently looking at chartplotters and reading up (again, still have not replaced my plotter despite saying I need to since I bought the boat) and the drama with Garmin and Navionics is interesting. First Navionics started making Garmin-compatible charts, then Garmin updated their firmware to l...

Re: Name on side of the boat

We have our boat’s name (Equinox) on both sides. Amazingly, I do not seem to have a picture of the side of my boat on my phone but the letters are 5.75 inches high. My wife is a designer and came up with a fairly simple design. Our Montauk 170 has the blue logo/stripes so the letters are that same b...

Re: 2013 190 MONTAUK: Sump Pump Failure

I'm not sure if the setup is similar to the 170, I assume it is. Fuse [or] breaker is obviously the first stop. From there, it starts getting a little trickier. It took us some time to narrow down [the cause of] our [boat's electrical malfunction] to [be from] corrosion where the pump wiring is spli...

Re: Montauk and Dauntless Hull Shape and Handling Differences

Very interesting question. I have found that both the classic Montauk I used to drive as well as my 170 seem to have stability beyond what you would expect from this size boat. I've been in reasonably nasty conditions in both and never really felt any concern whatsoever. Well, as long as I was going...

Re: E-TEC Sometimes Lower RPM

Thanks Jim, I am going to watch the tachometer the next time I am out so I can give better information. Throttle lever has been at full throttle, that I have confirmed while experiencing the concern. I should have thought of the fact that S.A.F.E. would limit it to 1,200 RPM. It seems like this is l...

E-TEC Sometimes Lower RPM

On a 2014 Montauk 170 a 2015 Evinrude E-Tec 90 H.O. is mounted. When the engine is trimmed towards the upper end of the trim range, and when there is flat water, the boat will usually hit about 40-MPH. Sometimes, though, the engine will gradually drop speed to about 30-MPH. I will pay more attention...

Re: 2003 170 Montauk Re-power with Four-stroke-cycle Engine

When we re-powered our 2004 Montauk 170, I was dead set on a [engine using a four-stroke-power-cycle] because of my experience with an older Montauk 17. It was used and abused commercially, but [its engine using two-stroke-power-cycle] had a tendency to be very difficult to start, even if you knew i...

Re: Is a classic Montauk a good fit for me?

I have an 2004 Montauk 170. It definitely rides better than the older Montauk hull, but it's still a very rough ride in any significant seas. I have driven the original Montauk in full blown storms with water up to my ankles in the boat, and have had my 170 out in some very rough conditions as well....

Re: Why was the boat I bought so dirty?

I cleaned sailboats during the summer as a teenager. What you are seeing is extremely typical. I wouldn't necessarily say the boat had been swamped just based on what you're seeing. Totally possible, but this happens without swamping all the time. Black mold and mildew just happens in boats. The sai...

Re: 170 Montauk Sun Lounge Option

Interested in this topic. I had looked around for information about the sun lounge when we bought the boat, but I did not find that much. If I recall, my 04 Montauk doesn't have the wood blocks embedded in the deck to allow me to secure a rear seat, but I don't think there was any such concern assoc...

Re: 2006 170 Montauk Re-power

This year we re-powered our 2004 170 Montauk with the E-TEC 90 H.O. I am very satisfied with it, though I think the propeller could use more pitch. The 170 MONTAUK will go over 40-MPH, and the boat feels like maybe it has just a little too much power for its own good when running in the ocean--which...

Re: GARMIN new echoMAP CHIRP Products

[The new products from GARMIN in the echoMAP CHIRP product line] seem like an overall lower out-the-door cost than the previous models. I have been [planing] to upgrade, so maybe next year will be the year. The model [echoMAP CHIRP] 74dv is definitely the one, if a 7 inch plotter will work on [a Bos...

Re: 170 MONTAUK: First Time on a Mooring; Drain Plug

I would definitely not leave the drain plug out. Even if you are comfortable with where the boat sits in the water, you're going to get marine growth in the sump where it will cause problems and be impossible to clean out. I think the suggestion of a solar charger and leaving the pump on is excellen...
