Re: Used Boat Purchase: See in person or hire surveyor

If it makes you feel better I am driving from Chicago to New York this weekend to look at a boat before I go hiring a surveyor. Especially because they are telling me a survey for a 30' boat is $1150. Then again I am pretty handy and know enough about boats to make a pretty good educated guess on a ...

Re: Lowrance HDS First-generation: improving speed of user interface; waypoint, routes, and trails file management

I, also, have a first-generation Lowrance HDS. I will have to play with the recorded trails and make sure they are not adding up. I am using a Navionics-plus card. I downloaded about 7-gigabyte of maps to the card, and the maps were really slow. I wiped the card and was more picky on what I download...

Taking the plunge: Bye-bye Bottom Paint

Well, finally taking the plunge and removing my boat's bottom paint. The hull came with the paint on already and it was in poor shape. I guessed what type of paint it was, and and tried to touch it up. I guess I guessed wrong because the new paint didn't stick. A few months went by and the new stuff...

Re: "1-Foot-itis" Dauntless 15 v. Dauntless16

Just do it. once you have the itch there is only one way to cure it. Now if you get creative you might beable to get a 18' in the garage. My garage was right about the same size as yours and I was able to squeeze a 19' triumph in it. I had to put tape on the floor so I knew exactly how and where it ...

I can't speak for the REVENGE. My 23 CONQUEST has the same hull as an OUTRAGE. [The hull's] ride is chop is terrible. The boat likes it either flat or big rollers. It is a extremely dry boat.

The 400 costs $5,000 (estimated) more than the 350. Lots of money for an extra 50-HP.

23' conquest and tiw with a f-250 or a 28' motorhome. Boat and trailer weigh 7k. 250 and boat weigh about13k together. Boat and RV are about 19,000lbs together. I run both at 70mph. Once in a while if I'm not in any sort of hurry I will take it down to 65 but only to save fuel.

Re: Buying new trailer: Single v. Tandem

Single is easier to backup for sure, and, if the boat is light enough, you can turn it by hand, whereas a tandem--forget trying to move yourself even with it empty. The single is a better option with the exception of one thing: if a tire blows and [you] don't have a spare, or if a wheel bearing is l...

Re: NAVICO New Auto-pilot Packages

A few months back a friend of mine installed the low-end Simrad auto-pilot on a 23-foot boat and really likes it. The new compasses they are using on these new auto-pilots are admirable. [ON OTHER AUTO-PILOTS] I got a new a Raymarine EVO1 autopilot at the end of last year; it is very good also. I th...

1999 Conquest 23 Squeaking and Cracked Gel Coat

During the last few trips when [the author's 1999 Conquest 23 boat is in] waves of two-feet height or more I have heard a loud squeak. If I put my head down, the squeak seems to be coming from in front of where my feet are while driving on the starboard side. The gel coat in that area is starting to...

Re: 1999 Conquest 23 Preventive Maintance

Yes it is the garboard plug. When I got the boat It had a O-ring. Then I called a [Boston Whaler boat] dealer and ordered 2 n. w plugs with gaskets. They were also O-rings. I just think the O-rings were probably old. My plug has a slot in it that fits a Quarter perfectly, and I use a Quarter to tigh...

Thanks for the reply. I guess will just leave [something not desribed] alone. I do have to find a better place to get the O-rings for the plastic bilge plug. I ordered two new ones and both have dry rotted in less then a year. Probably just old stock I guess.

I just installed a Raymarine autopilot a month ago. Autopilot itself was really easy. Getting all the right fittings and hoses was another story. SeaStar makes a add a helm kit that has lots of fittings in it and hose. I used this as I needed most all of the fittings in the kit and separate the fitt...

Re: 1999 CONQUEST 23; Pulling Deck

I found the answer to my own question--and not a good answer. I found a drawing on whalerparts.com. The upper deck and the back deck are one piece all the way back to the engines. To remove [the deck] I would have to either cut it or pull the whole back off the boat--way more then I can deal with. I...

1999 CONQUEST 23; Pulling Deck

[On a 1999 Boston Whaler CONQUEST 23 I] had to replace the hydraulic hoses for the steering. Instead of the hoses coming out, I ended up pulling all the wires half way out of th...

Re: Chart Plotter Shuts Off When Outboard Engine is Cranked Over

As said above a bad battery could be the culprit. I had the same concern in a past boat that was not only when the motor turned over but also when I use my trim tabs. Turned out the end of my powercable was getting corroded. The corrosion can also cause a loss in voltage making the system less effic...

Also take a look at Grizzly coolers. Same deal as the yeti and a bit cheaper. I also think Gander Mountain has a house brand which is a grizzly I think.
