Missing Boater: Louisiana
Here's a safety reminder for us all. This is a fellow Whaler owner. Interesting to note that the 17 foot boat was rigged with shrimping gear on the stern but I don't know if that contributed to the accident. The boat was found capsized but the owner has not been found. Apparently, he was alone in th...

Boat Insurance Rider On Home Policy
My boat is insured through a rider on my home owner policy, big mistake. I had some damage to my boat's hull and called my insurance company regarding a claim and learned that my "no claim 10% discount" for my entire home owner's policy would go away for even a small claim on the boat poli...

Re: Assessment of c.1984 CENTER CONSOLE 15 with 70-HP
Sounds like a reasonable deal to me assuming Jim H comments. I ran a 1992 Evinrude 70 on my 15 footer for many years and was happy with the performance. Do I like my Yamaha F70 better, yes, but for that price, I wouldn't hesitate if I were in your position. The other thing I would look for in the hu...

Re: Outrage RPS Z-Leg Mounting Holes Stripped
Jim, I sure hope not. I do not feel any soft spots when walking on the deck. I researched the old forum and some recommended removing the inspection plates to try to detect if the backing wood is rotting, although this is not a true indication of potential rotted wood in the immediate area of the z-...

Re: Outrage RPS Z-Leg Mounting Holes Stripped
Thanks, Jim. I like the method discussed in the FAQ best, although I was hoping not to drill a hole that large.

Outrage RPS Z-Leg Mounting Holes Stripped
Two of the screw holes where the Z-legs are mounted to the deck have stripped and now the screws won't tighten. Any recommendations on how to fix this problem? I was thinking about some kind of stainless steel rivet nut of other type of screw anchor. I don't want to use a well nut because I would ha...

Not mine but I saw this in Craigslist New Orleans, boat is in Gulfport, Mississippi. $6900 seems reasonable, thought someone might be interested. 1992 17 foot Boston Whaler Outrage with a 1992 Johnson 120hp, boat has all new electrical done. All new parts, new fuel filter, bilge pumps has a simrad gps...

VHF Antenna Height
An article about VHF Marine Band antenna height on the Sportfishing Magazine website states: “As a general rule, antenna height should be less than half the length of the boat.” I always thought that the higher the antenna the better. Why should you limit the height?

Re: Drain Tubes on 15-footer: Brass or Plastic
Matt, mine is not a Montauk, it is a classic (1982) 15' model. I don't remember exactly what I paid but with the tool I think it was a little over $100
If you're thinking of using PVC, the transom drain tube ID is important also because it needs to fit a standard drain plug.

Re: Drain Tubes on 15-footer: Brass or Plastic
I recently replaced mine on my 15' using brass and worked out well. Bought from Sue at (use to be) Twin Cities.
Why 3? I replaced 4. One in the bilge, 2 in transom splash well, one in the bow storage.

Mine is a 1992 Outrage 17 length from the outboard transom to the rear of the console base = 60" Does the front of the bow rail extend past the bow. No, the point of the rail is set back approx 2 1/2" from the point of the bow What is the height from the point of the bow to the bottom of t...

Re: 1976 SPORT 15 with F70
First of all, congratulations on the choice of motor. You won't regret that decision. The F70 weighs approximately 40 pounds more than the 70 HP 2 strokes of the mid 70's (257 vs 220). Unless you have reason to believe that your transom has weakened over the years, I see no reason to be concerned. M...

Using Crouch's Formula to Predict Waterlogged Hull
Crouch's formula is used to calculate the speed potential of a hull based on HP, weight, and a "hull constant". From my research, I believe the hull constant for Boston Whaler hulls is typically 180 to 200. Crouch's Formula: The Square Root of (Total Shaft Horsepower / Weight ) x Constant ...

Re: 1992 Outrage 17 Fuel Tank
Thanks for the detailed responses. Very good information here. Minimally, I plan to change the hoses and clamps, I already talked to Sue about it and they are available. I always use non ethanol fuel and almost always fill up immediately before operation so fuel shouldn't be holding in the fill line...

1992 Outrage 17 Fuel Tank
Although I have no reason to suspect I have a problem, I am concerned about the internal fuel tank on my 1992 17' Outrage, only because of the age. Are there any recommended inspections or maintenance that I should be doing? Is its recommended to just change it out at 25 years old, even though there...

Hi Phil, Welcome back to the club. Sounds like you and I have nearly identical models. Mine is a 1992 also. It is powered by a 115 E-tec and has the rear live well. I removed the front rail to add a mount for a trolling motor using only holes for the front cleat. Look forward to communicating in the...

Beware of Sandbars
This shows the damage a sandbar can do. It happened out of South Pass of the Mississippi River near Venice, La. Be careful out there.

Here is the response I got back from Aurora. Remove the stains with Waterline Stain Remover. Deep clean and prep the fiberglass with Boat Scrub and a Marine Power Mitt. Apply 2 coats of VS721. Wipe any slime off the bottom when you can and the bottom should stay clean. The VS721 will reduce the fric...

Re: Gel Coat Stains Keep Coming Back
Yea Fly, that's what I'm afraid of. I wouldn't think that the gelcoat is thin since this is a red dot "commercial" hull and is supposed to have thicker gelcoat. Thanks for the response.
Dutch, I contacted Aurora and waiting for their reply. Thanks

Thanks, Jim. I'll give the paste wax a try. I assume that if it is coming from the inside could only mean one thing, water in the hull.

Gel Coat Stains Keep Coming Back
To remove stains from my boat's gel coat layer, I have been using Davis FSR stain remover, and it works great. Problem is the stains keep coming back, seemingly in the same spots, after I return from each trip. Initially, I used the FSR followed by Meguire's marine polish. The stains are primarily a...
