Re: Classic 15 Replace Steering Wheel and Helm

Thanks. All details were a help.

ASIDE ABOUT A DIFFERENT BOAT: On an inboard boat I used rack and pinion. The steering had a lot of torque at the wheel and it was a huge blessing--but there was plenty of space for the larger rack and pinion.

Re: Classic 15 Replace Steering Wheel and Helm

OLDSLOW'--your approach to conversion to center console is really cool, especially how you secured the console. I hate screwing into fiberglass. The steering cable on my boat exits the console on starboard and goes aft to the engine. The steering works quite well, actually, but it seems very old. I ...

Re: Classic 15 Replace Steering Wheel and Helm

To anyone has replaced a cable helm on a 13/15/17 foot classic: I would appreciate any personal experience you may be willing to offer. I have used cable and hydraulic helms in a variety of boats for many years and would like specific experience in this application, to the extent it is out there. Th...

Re: Classic 15 Replace Steering Wheel and Helm

Here is a view of the 15-footer showing the non-OEM side console.

Fig. 1. This photo was take after the re-fit. The engine was still a Yamaha 60-HP. The location is northern tip of Palm Beach Island, as you might infer from the water color.

Classic 15 Replace Steering Wheel and Helm

Hello Folks. I have a 1989 15-footer that has been modified with a side console that is higher than original, more like a small center console, offset to starboard. I plan to replace the 16-inch Destroyer steering wheel with something much smaller with a knob. I feel the wheel is far too big for the...

Re: 1989 15-footer: Repairing hole, cracks, and transom separations

Thanks for the notes, guys. Jim, I think I must have used polyester resin in the past, because I always had problems with curing and adhering. I'm going to try the West System and start under the keel. This is one of those times when it really would be great to have a neighbor that had the skills so...

Re: 1989 15-footer: Repairing hole, cracks, and transom separation

I originally wrote to ask for help with a trailer-gouged and sun-crazed 15 Classic. After a great summer using the boat, I have now stripped it to the bare hull and talked to a number of fiberglass guys. Honestly, no one seems very interested, but that's the nature of service people in South Florida...

Re: 1989 15-footer; old Tohatsu 50

FOLLOW-UP: I replaced the existing, beat up, 10.5 x 9-pitch aluminum propeller with a brand new Solas Amita aluminum 11.6 x 11-pitch. The engine speed dropped to 5100-RPM from 5700-RPM. I'd like to be turning more than 5100-RPM (and the boat loading was light), but something did not add up right. At...

Re: 1989 15-footer: Repairing hole, cracks, and transom separations

Hi Jim. I have read those, very informative posts---and probably will many more times as I gather the courage to get started on the cosmetic part of the work. I will say that there are definitely parts of the gel coat that simply look too far gone.

Re: 1989 15-footer; old Tohatsu 50

Hi Jim--I think mine was a side console that was ripped out and replaced with a side center console with a flip-back seat/cooler combo. It has a portable tank and there are old holes in the sides where the bench may have been. As to propeller. I think we are in complete agreement. I wasn't happy wit...

Re: Hello and Thank You

It seems to ride pretty well, even though it is far from dialed-in at this point. The one I have has a flip-back cooler seat and an elevated side console. It is actually just like a center console, just not in the center. Those low seats look cool, but you're right, they re rough on the back!

Re: '89 Side Console 15 with (old) Tohatsu 50

Thanks, Phil, that is an interesting thread and a good read on that motor. I'm also trying to find information for the 15', so the pitches they discuss there would all be too high.

Re: '89 Side Console 15 with (old) Tohatsu 50

The prop is aluminum and has "Japan" stamped on it. I cannot discern the maker or model. I measured the radius at 5.25", so it is close to a 10.5" diameter. I know that the previous (dad) owner intentionally under-propped (pitched) the motor to keep his son from going too fast. T...

1989 15-footer: Repairing hole, cracks, and transom separations

I've done a fair amount of reading here and am not sure whether to paint or fix the gel coat. I recently bought a 1989 15' and the poor thing has been trailer-gouged and sun-baked. There are also many careless holes drilled all over the inner liner. I'm going to have to drill-out and re-seal a bunch...

1989 15-footer; old Tohatsu 50

I have a 1989 15-foot Boston Whaler boat (with a side console) with an old Tohatsu 50-HP two-stoke-power-cycle outboard engine. I only recently bought the boat and the whole thing needs a lot of love. I'm now at the point where the engine is running well, and it's time to replace the beat up, under-...

Hello and Thank You

Hello All. I am a new poster and new to this forum, but have read off and on for years. I can't say enough about the value of the extensive information complied here. Thank you to all involved! I have wanted a 15-foot Boston Whaler for perhaps 40 years. I'm not at all new to boating but never got th...
