Re: Horsepower Ratings
I meant what part of the engine does the manufacturer use to rate horsepower. For example, do they measure it at the crank or the propeller?

Horsepower Ratings
Where on an outboard do the manufacturers rate their outboards for horsepower?
Where does the Environmental Protection Agency rate the outboards for horsepower?
If you cross check a manufacturer's rating with the EPA's rating, there is quite a difference in horsepower.

Our old Johnson 70 was removed a few years back when it was on it its last leg. We removed the entire thing, and a dealer in Mount Vernon sold it for us. All of the steps I listed are all very relevant when re-powering a whaler no matter what horsepower is chosen. They will make the re-power decision easier, and relevant to how the particular boat is being used--especially in this case where the amount of horsepower has not been determined.

Fishnff Honda lists their 50-HP outboard engines as 214-lbs or 223-lbs, depending on model. Your new four-stroke-power-cycle Mercury 60 is listed as 247-lbs. Hello Montauk 17, I see you are contemplating what type and horsepower of outboard to purchase for your Montauk 17. Hello Fishnff [Deleted sidebar discussion about a different engine] If you don't trust your stock tachometer, hook up an auxiliary tachometer.
