Re: Through-hull Fitting Repairs c.2004 NANTUCKET
I replaced all three thru-hulls on my 2004 170 Montauk last year, and it was NOT easy to find better quality replacements.. Giving Boston Whaler the benefit of the doubt I think they may be Marelon rather than plain old plastic. The fittings were so worn and the caulk crumbling, that I was able to l...

Re: 2008 Montauk 170 Transom Support Using "transom saver device"
Then I'm not sure what the tilt support lever is for. Isn't it even called a "trailering lock" in some contexts?

Re: 170 MONTAUK Replacement of Shift-Throttle Cables
Just to conclude this thread, I succesfully replaced both shift & throttle cables (while the boat was in the water). Everything you need to deal with in the engine is on the starboard side close to the front so access from the boat instead of standing on the ground was no problem. As predicted, ...

Re: 170 MONTAUK Replacement of Shift-Throttle Cables
Thank you. Good advice, since I am not a patient person. What is the best stuff to use for lubricant that won't leave a greasy mess? My other decision is whether to do it now before the stress on the control becomes a problem, or wait until the end of the season. If I do it now, it would have to be ...

Re: 170 MONTAUK Replacement of Shift-Throttle Cables
Yes, I didn't think it through. Only the small end of each cable (the end that ultimately attaches to the console) will fit through the grommet on the engine cowl. And I would guess the other end, which has a more complex connector and alignment pin, would be much more difficult to pull through the ...

Re: 170 MONTAUK Replacement of Shift-Throttle Cables
Thank you. All good hints. However, I take it you do not recommend using the old cables to pull the new cables through. That seems the most straightforward, but perhaps I have not thought it through. Indeed the existing pull rope does not appear to be something I would trust to put any great load on...

170 MONTAUK Replacement of Shift-Throttle Cables
A 2004 170 MONTAUK boat has a two-year-old engine and a two-week-old console control. Last thing to replace is the cables. It looks straightforward: I assume you use the old cables as pullers for the new cables through the tunnel. Connection at the control end I already know how to do, and the conne...

"Mark all topics read" function
If I am in an individual forum, the GAM e.g., and click on "mark all topics read", indeed the icon to the left of each topic which was formerly red goes to white. But then when I immediately pop back up to the the main forum index, the icon for that individual forum still shows red. Is thi...

Re: A Brief History of the Mercury 90-HP FOURSTROKE
As an owner of the recent 2.1L engine with "command thrust", I have to agree that there is a change of direction here along the lines of simplicity and maintainability. I would note that the shop manual for the engine is VERY different from the previous Mercury manuals I have owned. It is ...

Re: Life with my carbureted Mercury/Yamaha FourStroke (continued)
I believe I was one of the original contributors to that thread [from the old forum]. I've been away for a while. But to summarize, I basically kept that thing going until 2015 with a cocktail of additives, completely draining the fuel out of the carbs in the off season and other care by a really go...
