180 DAUNTLESS Engine Removal: Step-by-step Instructions180 Dauntless

Give me step-by-step instructions for pulling a Mercury OptiMax 135-HP engine from the [transom] of a 180 Dauntless.

I want to replace the mechanical steering system, including the helm.

This boat has the SmartCraft gauges. The wiring, hoses, and cables all pass through the same stern passage.

Re: Caulk Color Match to Desert Tan

i think the mineral spirits [may] have been the problem. [Mineral Spirits have an] oil base and may have left a film. Try acetone in an area and see if that evaporates better without leaving any film.

2005 180 DAUNTLESS New Steering

What steering system is recommended for a 2005 180 DAUNTLESS to replace the original mechanical steering?

What length of cable is needed?

What retail vendor is recommended

The steering wheel now has a tilt feature that I do not want to lose.

Re: 2005 180 DAUNTLESS Steering Always Hard To Turn

I did get smoother travel in the OUTPUT CABLE after continued flushing of the engine TILT TUBE. Mistakenly I thought a grease fitting on the front of engine lubricated the cable and rod inside the [TILT] tube. That fitting lubes the tilt hinge. Before reassembling I put a small coating of grease on ...

Re: 2005 180 DAUNTLESS Steering Always Hard To Turn

[The 20005 180 DAUNTLESS steering] is a cable system. [The boat runs] in the Chesapeake Bay saltwater. I will test the steering when I disconnect the [drag link between the engine tiller and the steering rod actuator]. I followed Phil's advice and ordered a Steersman Nut. When I disconnected the [dr...

2005 180 DAUNTLESS Steering Always Hard To Turn

On my 2005 Dauntless 180 with a 2006 Mercury 135-HP engine the steering has always been hard to turn, more so at slow speeds, but also at cruising speeds. Now the steering is even harder to turn this Spring after recommissioning the boat. The steering may have loosened up some with use. [Give] sugge...

2005 DAUNTLESS 180 Ignition Key Switch

The engine ignition key switch on my 2005 180 Dauntless is very tight, and I am afraid a key may break off. There is not much room to get in behind the switch to pull it out and replace it. I've ordered a replacement.

What difficulty can I expect to have in replacing the ignition key switch?

Re: 2005 180 DAUNTLESS Water in Fastener Holes in Sump

Chuck—thank you. To get out the water was a time consuming job. Wish I knew how the water got between the skins, and I wish I knew for sure that all of it was out. I replaced the original pump with a Rule-brand pump with a built-in float. I used 3M4200 marine adhesive sealant adhere the pump to the ...

Re: Anderson Upholstery

Specialty replaced all of my upholstery for a 2005 180 Dauntless, I had to have the bow cushion replaced and the back cushion on the Helm station, they did replace them no delay. So, you may think they are not the highest quality, but be sure you understand they back their work and products.

Re: 2005 180 DAUNTLESS Water in Fastener Holes in Sump

More information, I used a shop vac, that was a great idea. I could feel the vacuum hose getting cold as I sucked water after 10 - 15 minutes I looked in the vacuum tank, it had over a half gallon of water. I emptied the water and dried out the vacuum tank and wanted to make sure I was getting water...

Thank you for the reply, yes when I used a heat gun yesterday, it seemed to draw water up, kind of scared me. I left a fan on in the bilge over night, but got an unexpected rain before I got up and rain water got into bilge. One step forward and two in reverse. I will go to the hair drier and try so...

2005 180 DAUNTLESS Water in Fastener Holes in Sump

I have a 2005 180 Dauntless. I bought it c.2016. I had a local Boston Whaler dealer go through everything mechanical, but they did not have any comments on the sump pump or float switch. The Rule 40A float switch failed—actually had a short in the system and melted the housing—and was causing the fl...

Re: 190 MONTAUK with 115-HP is Under-power

The [advice to a buyer of a 190 MONTAUK with 115-HP] is walk away, unless you want to get into the used engine sales business. The [190 MONTAUK] is a very good hull, a good boat, but the [115-HP] engine is small for the weight, beam, and length. I am not in a position to challenge the theory that ev...

190 MONTAUK with 115-HP is Under-power

[New Topic introduced into a discussion on how to make a repair; this topic has been separated and is now its own thread.] A 190 Montauk with 115-HP is under-powered. A 115-HP [on a used 190 MONTAUK] may have been a replacement engine, I can't imagine a dealer selling [a 190 MONTAUK] with such a sma...
