Re: 1983 Johnson 70 dies at full throttle

Update: Took out the [so far unidentified] boat today with my son so I could pump the [fuel] primer [bulb on the fuel hose to the 1983 Johnson outboard engine] while [my son was] driving. [The 1983 Johnson 70 outboard engine] fired up first try and died after putting it in gear; tried to start engin...

Re: 1983 Johnson 70 dies at full throttle

There are many places in the fuel system where the flow of fuel could be obstructed... I agree I will check cowling hose and float valves: The fuel tank, water separator, the primer bulb and check values and fittings are all 3 months old. Its been running great until we started tubing/wakeboarding....

Re: 1983 Johnson 70 dies at full throttle

Fuel pump is the most likely culprit. Carburetors are fine - it's not likely that all three got dirty between one run and the next. See if you can keep it going by pumping the fuel bulb. If that works, then the pump isn't pumping and you'll have figure out why. If it's the original pump, it could w...

1983 Johnson 70 dies at full throttle

I was taking my kids tubing, and the boat ran great for 10 to 15 minutes. Then while pulling them the 1983 Johnson 70 engine died at full throttle. The engine would start back up and then die again after three to fine minutes. I got her back to the dock and would start it with choke and it would run...

Re: Johnson 70 Runs Great Then Will Not Start

Another quick update: it rained so I didn't take out [the boat] today but I did start [the Johnson 70-HP engine] in the driveway, again with the portable tank, new A1 lines, and REC-90 fuel. The engine started first try and idled for ten minutes with no problem. I will take it out Thursday to test i...

Re: Johnson 70 Runs Great Then Will Not Start

If there is no actuation of the electrical solenoid for the fuel enrichment circuit, check the wiring between the ignition key switch and the solenoid. The typical wiring is shown in the REFERENCE section article at http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/ignitionSwitch.html The circuit for the ...

Re: Johnson 70 Runs Great Then Will Not Start

You have to give more details about "will not start" and "will not crank." When I push in the key, I do not hear the primer valve click. The engine will turn over but will not start. It does this it seems every other boat trip. A couple days prior [the engine] started first try ...

It was :) I just ran out and bought A-1 black lines but it did have the b-1 gray lines on. I read another post where someone said these corrode easy and can restrict proper flow

flymo wrote:No fuel problem will prevent the motor from cranking over on the starter - that has to be electrical. For starters, check the lanyard switch and jiggle the throttle to make sure it's really in neutral.

Ok thanks I will check that now

Johnson 70 Runs Great Then Will Not Start

Hey guys--I recently bought for my son and daughter--and of course for me too--- a 1983 15-footer with a Johnson 70-HP. She is pretty. However, the [Johnson 70-HP outboard engine] will run fine one day, then the next day it will not crank. Three days ago this happened: --[engine] started right up --...
