You may want to search for the words: back trolling transom splash guards. Walleye fisherman often backtroll to go slow and have fabricated some devices to minimize water ingress while still allowing water egress.

I am assuming your running the engine in the water and not on a set of clamp on water muffs when you are running at 3000 rpms. I suggest removing the engine cowl and take the boat for a ride and either use an infrared temperature gauge or even your hand to see how hot the engine is getting.

I would not use an impact driver with stainless steel. I did that and severely galled some screws to the point where they were impossible to remove. I learned from that mistake.

I think you would be better off selling the heavy motor and finding an older used 2 stroke power cycle engine as opposed to your plan. The resale value of your lengthening project would suffer compared to an original hull.

Very nice job on the fabrication and I am sure that will absorb some of the stresses on the transom caused by the extra leverage of the 5 inch set back of the jackplate. I assume you are next going to through bolt the other side of the plate similar to what you did for the transom side?

The anchor locker in the front of the boat would cause the batteries to be subject to more pounding from the boat encountering waves and wakes compared to batteries located further aft.

I also used foam for my 1987 Montauk 17 boat to fill the space between the top of a new fuel tank and the RPS seat bottom to prevent shifting. After three years I have had no concerns about the tank shifting.

I made a replacement hatch for my c.1970 13-footer with a solid piece of varnished teak board. The varnished teak hatch board looked great.

I have always thought the hatch should have been a teak plank as used for the thwart seats and not from plywood.

I am able to fit a 1987 Montauk 17 into my garage which is only 19-feet 10-inches. I replaced the stock trailer winch post and added a hinge to the trailer tongue. I have to store it in the garage with the engine down to save space.

When I was age 15 we used to ski behind a 16-foot-boat with an 18-HP stroke-power-cycle-engine with two people in the boat and one on skis. We each weighed 150-lbs.

In 2017 I sold my 1970' 13-footer with an Evinrude 20-HP engine on a trailer for $2,500.

I then bought a nice 1987 MONTAUK 17 with a 1987 Mercury 70-HP engine for $3,500.

I am glad I was able to upgrade in 2017. Prices have gone up very high in the last few years.

Do you have access to be able to add a backing plate and washers and nuts under the area where you would like to mount the trolling motor on the bow?

If you have access to through bolt the mount I would do that.

If you are looking for a boat to buy. I would highly consider finding one that was stored on the trailer on land and not wet slipped. While on land storing the boat under either a cover or garage would also minimize the amount of water sitting in the boat if the plug was left in.

Recommend a quality door latch--other than from Specialty Marine--to hold closed the console door of a 1987 MONTAUK 17 while the boat us underway. A cost of $40 is okay. The door latch does not have to have a key lock.
