Re: Harpoon 4.6 Bailer
You don't need to simulate rain. Pouring a little water in and seeing that it flows to the bailers is sufficient.

Re: Harpoon 4.6 bailer question
If it is at all like the 5.2, leave them open. the boat is designed to float above the bailers (so that it is self-rescuing) and so keep them open so rain water just flows out--will be easy to test.

Re: Advice to First-time Boat Owner
[Recommends installation of a] good fuel filter.
Modern outboards are very reliable.
Most my early troubles were with fuel. A RACOR fuel-water separating filter is a must if your new boat doesn't already have one.

Re: Upgrading to a 21' Ribside
We ran an old Evinrude 140 on our [OUTRAGE 21]. [The boat] later was rated at 115-HP, and it was fine for anything we wanted to do. With four adults and a couple of kids, it could get up and go no problem, even waterskiing. That old hull is very light, flat, and very easy to plane. One time [the eng...

Re: Upgrading to a 21' Ribside
The rib-side or smooth side [OUTRAGE 21] will be excellent. I've run both, and shouldn't seem too much for you. Their ability to run in skinny waters rivals the 17, especially if you resist the urge to maximally power it. Note that [the OUTRAGE 21] isn't the smoothest riding 21-footer out there. The...

Re: 13' control cable length loop or no loop?
I believe the loop is preferable, and have rigged all my 13, 15 and 16-foot Boston Whaler boats that way. The cable won't bind and restrict steering, especially when you turn right and the cable wants to go left.

even with overlap I still screwed a wood strip into the riser and then screwed the seats into those strips. Just seemed more secure to me.

A speed of 35-nautical-miles-per-hour IS 40-MPH, and he's doing just fine.

Re: Transom weight for an old 17
[An outboard engine weight of] 400-lbs does seem a bit heavy for the old 16/17 boats, smirked bow or not. The old OMC V4 engines were about 320-lbs, they were about the maximum engine weight the hull really wants. Current four-stroke-cycle outboard engines of about 250-lbs engine weight run very wel...

Re: Re-finishing Mahogany
just do the top, exposed sides. for sides that are almost never exposed to the sun, since they are already finished, no need to sand and refinish.
every time you do this, (every couple of years, usually) you re-evaluate the unexposed surfaces.

Re: 1973 Outrage 21 Twin 70-HP
The OMC [in-line three-cylinder two-cycle outboard engines] were changed partially as a response to the rating system change, the two 70-HP engines are not putting out equal power. The earlier one is, at best, putting out closer to 60-HP. If you really are running two different 70-HP engines, with o...

Re: Steering Wheel Removal
[Removal of a steering wheel from a tapered shaft with keyway] can be extremely difficult. For a wheel puller to grip the wheel or hub reliably can be tough. Just this past winter I had to remove the whole assembly, support the wheel (mostly at the rim) and use a combination of heat and hitting the ...

Re: 2006 Mercury 60-HP FOURSTROKE: Water in Oil
Water can also be pumped into the oil depending on the design. I had a Suzuki 50 that pumped the water up through the side of the oil sump. The sump, exhaust and water all go through a crowded area. A gasket failed there and the water pump was pushing water straight into the oil sump. This failure w...

I had a Yamaha 50-HP outboard engine that also had problems running at 1,400 to 2,000-RPM and anywhere in between, a swing of 400 to 600-RPM]. [The cause of the problem] turned out to be water in the fuel. I thought water would take out all the cylinders but it didn't happen that way. A complete [fu...
