Re: 17-footer Rigging Tunnel

Yep. Agree. The hole does hold water in the area. I'm not sure how much water got in. I drilled some holes in the bottom and nothing came out. I weighed the boat and trailer and got 1,400-lbs. I figure the trailer is about 350-lbs, which gives me 1,050-lbs for the boat without the engine. That is a ...

Re: 17-footer Rigging Tunnel

In the photo it is standing water. I used a wet vac to suck it out and it is about 2" deep and lined with caulking. This boat was a fish and game boat but I guess a SONAR transducer is possible. In any case I plan to fill it. The catch is what to use that will stick to the caulking in that hole?

Re: 17-footer Rigging Tunnel

Now that I have it cleaned out, [the extra opening] appears to be lined with caulk. I'm pretty sure this was added for some reason.

The dry area is the bottom of the tube. The wet area is this extra area I mentioned.

17-footer Rigging Tunnel

The 17-foot boat has a rigging tube running down the middle under the deck. As I'm sure everyone knows, [the rigging tunnel is] used to route cables and fuel lines to the stern. My 17-footer seems to have three access points. Two are ovals and one, closest to the stern, is a round hole. Then a final...

Re: My 17 Montauk Adventure

Not really much to update but I figured I would for the record. I was able to trade the spare hull and trailer for a kicker motor so I'm pretty happy with that. I also sold the ski pylon for $100.00. I have a few more parts that will be left over to sell so I feel pretty good about the costs. I got ...

Re: My 17 Montauk Adventure

The system would not let me post any more photos in the first post. 20180513_101419a.jpg Here is a better view of that cover at the stern. I want it gone. Cutting it out is not a problem but making it look nice after might well be beyond my skill level. I'm taking it to a pro next week to see what h...

My 17 Montauk Adventure

After reading DTmackey's write up for his 15 footer I decided to chronicle my restoration. Please don't expect anything like his. I'm not nearly that patient or skilled. For starters a week ago I purchased two 17 foot Boston Whalers. I'll call them hull 1 and hull 2 trying to keep this clear. 201805...

Re: Montauk 17 Fuel Tank Locations

I wasn't going to build the reversible seat just a teak seat of some sort.

Also I got the console out. That fuel tank was indeed vented. A rubber hose ran into the battery compartment. It is a wonder that boat still exists.

Re: Montauk 17 Fuel Tank Locations

Interesting thought Jim Thanks. Where do most people put the batteries? Also does anyone have good photos of the seating assembly. Neither boat has one and I am planning to build one. It would be good to see a few photos. I could also use a dimension from the transom to the helm. I should be able to...

Re: 17 foot Montauk Fuel tank locations

I actually wondered about venting. The one that is enclosed at the back of the boat is vented to the stern but there is no blower to clear fumes. Funny thing is this modification was made I believe by the Fish and Game Department. I need to get that console out and see how that other one is installe...

Montauk 17 Fuel Tank Locations

I'm new to the Whaler ownership club and I'm fixing up an older 1987 Montauk 17. I'm going to put on an Evinrude 115-HP engine, and I want a 6-HP kicker engine or trolling motor, as well. The boat I purchased has an area that was added in front of the transom. It is glassed in the width of the boat ...

Re: Buying 17-footer; Interpreting HIN; Evinrude 115

Thanks Dutchman The one hull is clearly (at least in my mind) trashed. It had/has water in the hull. The guy I bought it from drilled a bunch of 1/8" diameter holes in the bottom along both sides of the keel in an attempt to get the water out. He said water drained. I'm clearly no expert but I'...

I also got the story on the bare hull. It was purchased by fish and game. That is the reason there were no seats.

Re: Buying 17-footer; Interpreting HIN; Evinrude 115

I'm not sure, either, [if] the part in front has a fuel tank located under it. Basically it doubles as a seat. Until I get it apart I won't know if it was purchased that way or the front was added. If it was added they did a nice job. In the end I got both boats for $2,200. I have some work ahead: w...

Re: Buying 17-footer; Interpreting HIN; Evinrude 115

BACKSTORY on the boat that might be purchased: The owner is a contractor. He did work for a local boat mechanic business. The deal was the mechanic would give him the boat fixed. Then the mechanic discovered that the whaler couldn't be pulled apart like he thought. The mechanic did a quick and very ...

Re: Buying 17-footer; Interpreting HIN; Evinrude 115

Jim thanks for the help. The guy at the marina said he looked on the coast guard plate (at least I think that is what he meant). He said it said "17 bare hull" Sorry I didn't look at what I wrote down while I was posting. What would bare hull mean? Yes I figure this guy doesn't know much a...

Re: Buying 17-footer; Interpreting HIN; Evinrude 115

I read through the FAQ and that is why I thought the [1987] year was correct. I've not seen the "bare boat" title anyplace in my research but assume they might sell one without seats and such. My concern is that all that stuff was removed and holes covered up (possibly poorly) but I can't ...

Buying 17-footer; Interpreting HIN; Evinrude 115

I may buy a 17 foot Boston Whaler with just a small helm that is located in a strange place and no engine--but the price is right. The [HIN] is BWCK782SA787 and the name plate says 17-foot bare hull. I'm guessing someone bought just the hull and added this helm. Am I correct in thinking this is a 19...
