Re: Highlander as Tow Vehicle
Looked at a Highlander the last time around. Went with the 4Runner. Load limit of 5 grand [5,000-lbs perhaps], easily pulls my 15, and is a comfortable ride, especially for long hauls.--Craig in sultry Missouri

1978 Mercury 50-HP Oil Leaks from Gear Case
The bottom of the skeg on my 1978 50 HP Mercury is leaking oil. Upon close examination, it looks as if the previous owner had repaired the bottom with a Bondo-like substance. What are my options?

Re: 1978 Mercury Leak Near Propeller
Yellowjacket, I understood much of what you wrote and appreciate your wisdom and knowledge. Some of it went right over my head, the result of way too much time in college and way too little time tinkering. I rarely use fuel with ethanol and will drive miles to get real gas. Thank you for taking the ...

1978 Mercury Leak Near Propeller
A couple of questions from a newbie: After being on the water recently on my '78 15 Sport, the next day there was a black liquid that had leaked on the floor of my garage from my 1978 50 hp Merc. It seems to be originating from behind the prop. I'm not real mechanical. What am I looking at: New gask...

Red interior lighting is much easier on the eyes and makes things more discernible. I installed a small strip on my console and love it.

Re: Advice to First-time Boat Owner
As a fellow newbie with less than two years boating, check every screw, nut, and bolt on the trailer that can come loose because they will. I will not detail my experience except to say, been there. And check those lug nuts, regularly. A fella gave me a tip I like: make a mark on the lug nut and a m...

Re: Boat Cover When On Highway; Engine Supports
Thanks as usual for the variety of solutions. I invested in a fitted cover that is made from very heavy duty canvas and am going to experiment with securing it around the bottom of the boat instead of the trailer and suppiorting the motor for our annual journey to Salida, Colorado from St. Louis I'l...

Boat Cover When On Highway; Engine Supports
I bought a heavy duty cover for my boat for trailering on our annual trip to Colorado. Do I attach the straps to the trailer as I have seen pictured? Or, do I run the straps under my boat and cinch them tight as if you would do with a belt? What is the prevailing thought about traveling with or with...

I have a Sport and like the bow rail for the previously mentioned reasons: safety for the children that I teach to fish and a great place to put my feet when I use my front pedestal seat that the previous owner added.

Re: Engine that gurgles from a former newbie
I should add that this site and Joe's site helped me immensely with advice as this is my first boat. The mechanic found problems in the carbs that had been altered by somebody and configured incorrectly. He ended up replacing them with a new set that he located on ebay. He's a friend of a friend, so...

Engine that gurgles from a former newbie
Two years ago I bought my first Whaler, a 15 footer, but had problems with the 50 hp Merc. The motor gurgled and stuttered when I pushed the throttle forward halfway between neutral and wide open. I ask the forum for advice and I wanted to let you know the outcome. Originally I took it to Bass Pro t...
