Classic 15 with F70 performance

This past weekend, my adult daughter and I took my 1985 15’ Sport with Yamaha F70 out for a ride. At the beginning of summer I installed a PowerTech SCD3 13.35” x 17” prop but hadn’t truly tested it. My motor is mounted 2 holes up. We had about 8 gallons of gas, light gear, 325 in crew (me 200, her ...

Re: SPORT 15 with F70

I’m turning 6000 RPMs with the SCD3 13.25 x 17. My boat is a 1985 15 Sport with a 2014 Yamaha F70. I get 42 mph top speed with a light load (2 adults, 9 gallons of fuel and some light gear). My motor is mounted 2 holes up.

The wiring to the bow in my 1985 15 Sport runs behind the rub rail.

Re: SPORT 15 with F70

El Rollo: I ended up purchasing a SCD3 in 17-pitch, but haven’t been able to test it yet. My wife and I took a ride but she gets nervous when the boat gets over about 35-MPH . My engine is mounted at two-holes-up. I think I need to raise the engine one more hole. I’ll post again after further testing.

Phil: I contacted Ken with Propgods and he recommended the PowerTech SCD4 in 16-pitch. Thank you [and thank you EL ROLLO]

I was surprised he didn’t have a bimini top to protect himself from the sun. If it had been me, I would have been as red as a boiled crawfish by the second day.

SPORT 15 with F70

EL ROLLO: what propeller did you choose for your SPORT 15? I have the same boat (1985 15’ Sport) and engine (Yamaha F70) but without the jack plate, the trolling motor, and the extra batteries. I have been considering a four-blade. Most of my running is in the 4000 to 4500-RPM range and top-end spee...

Re: Outboard for 15-footer

If worried about the weight, consider the Yamaha F70 which is 253-lbs. An increase of 100-lbs is a lot for only an additional 5-HP.

I purchased a center cap from an on-line auction website for $30 that seems to be high quality.

I’m almost finished with my restoration and am pretty anxious. I found something that will work for me so you can take my name off the list. Thanks anyway.

Re: 1987 Montauk 17 Rub Rail Gap

Recently I replaced the rub rail on my 1985 Sport 15. The job was not bad. The rub rail was about $260 from Specialty Marine and fits 13 through 17 classic hulls. I’m not sure how you would splice it and not have an obvious repair showing. Good luck

You could also use a rivet nut. Check on Amazon. You can get a rivet nut in stainless steel.

Re: Re-power SUPER SPORT 15 with 115-HP

I own a 1985 15’ Sport with a Yamaha F70 four stroke. When I see people at gas stations and at landings, I always get comments such as “that boat must fly with a 70.” I respond that it is rated for 70 HP. For the record, I am running a Stiletto 13-1/4” x 17” prop with the motor mounted 3 holes up. B...

That’s good information but when I look it up, the blue label is Cleaner Wax. The green label is the Restorer Wax. Are you using the cleaner wax?

My 1985 15’ Sport is Desert Tan. I bought some of the Spectrum gel coat and it was a perfect match both inside and out.
I would your Montauk is the same color.

Re: AwlGrip Desert Tan

[Revives this thread after it has been dormant for two years and seven months] I would like to paint the non-skid on my 1985 Sport 15, and I’m hoping the Awlgrip Desert Sand is a close enough match. I see they have the color in multiple products. Have any readers of this thread tried the Awlgrip Des...
