Re: Boat for Boston Harbor, New England Coast

I trailered a 1979 Montauk [perhaps refers to a 1979 MONTAUK 17] for many years and boated in Buzzards Bay and Cape Cod Bay. I am admittedly a fair weather boater. The only time I had to turn around was when southeasterly kicked up off Wings Neck one afternoon. [The MONTAUK 17 is a] great boat for o...

Re: A Critical Observation About Caulking

About a year ago I replaced the deck caulk on my 1986 18’ Outrage. After a thorough prep I used a couple sizes of Ace Hardware foam backer and GE Silicone II Almond.

[The new caulk] looks good and is holding up well. Used only one tube for the whole deck, and there was a little left over.

Re: Cost of Electronic Remote Controls for Suzuki DF140BG

Good input Jim, thanks. The actual quotes are $13k and $15.5k out the door. My existing engine is a 2005 150 Optimax that is costing me money and I don’t feel I can rely on it, even with just 500 hours.

Cost of Electronic Remote Controls for Suzuki DF140BG

I am considering repowering my 1983 OUTRAGE 18 with [a SUZUKI DF140BG] engine. The increase in cost for the DF140BG with electronic remote controls is $2,500 more than the DF140A with manual controls, based on two quotes and each quote includes the cost of are the controls, the installation, a prope...

I went to order a console cover from Mills and sent Suzanne the picture above just to make sure it would fit. After review of the picture she said the console cover would NOT fit. Apparently when the helm was replaced and Baystar hydraulic steering installed the wheel is now more vertical then origi...

Sump osmotic blistering

My 1986 OUTRAGE 18 has some osmotic blistering in the aft starboard sump where water apparently sat over the years, consisting of quart-inch bubbles that are not broken. I am planning to ignore the blistering unless there is a risk of additional damage. This is not a pristine boat so I am not concer...

Re: Outrage sump pump

Thanks for the input. Jim, regarding the very expensive battery, I think I will pass. What about adding a 2nd battery next to the one on the starboard side? It would not be over a place with wood backing, but I could put the strap hold down screwed into the fiberglass with the hockey puck method. I ...

Re: Outrage sump pump

Thanks Jim, Yes I thought of that and there is a risk. Particularly since my engine is a 150 HP Optimax which requires 800 CCA to crank over and supply power to the starting systems. The sump pump should draw very little on "automatic". My new battery is rated at 125 minutes reserve capaci...

Outrage sump pump

On my 1986 Outrage 18 I am planning to install a pump in the aft starboard sump. I understand this was an option in 1986, but my boat does not have one and apparently there was never one installed. My plan is to use a Rule 500-GPH fully-automatic pump, which I happen to have on hand. I will wire it ...

Re: New, for me, 1986 18' Outrage

I was getting ready to order a console cover for my 1986 18 Outrage and it all of a sudden struck me that I may not have an original console. Below is a picture of what I have. Was this an original standard console, an optional console or from a larger Outrage?

Re: Selling MONTAUK--Talk Me Out of Doing It

So what will selling it do for you? Add some dollars into your checking account? If you need the money sell it. Otherwise keep it. You will regret selling it if you don’t have to. It’s a beauty.

I was going down the path of setting up my 18 Outrage with a Navionics Charting App and Raymarine Wi-fish sonar displayed on my Ipad Air 2. But I got a TKO (Technical Knock Out). Re: Outrage Drain

When the new tank was installed it was not foamed in. It rests on KING StarBoard pads with neoprene attached then glued to the tank. Then held in with metal strips across the tank top. Any water in the cavity will run to the rear. A clear 1/2” tube is installed such that water that gets in can be pu...

Outrage Drain

On my 1986 OUTRAGE there is a cockpit sump and drain on the aft starboard side to make the cockpit drain as designed. There is also a tunnel at the top of this sump where the fuel line runs to the tank. It appears to me, on my boat, that when a lot of water such as from a heavy rain, needs to be dra...

The wood I have on my 1986 Outrage all appears to be teak, except the under gunwale rod holders. New, for me, 1986 18' Outrage

I have a 1979 Montauk that I restored in 2001 with a lot of help from those on this site. Had it on Cape Cod, retired in 2014 to the Florida Keys and brought the boat with me. It's been great and bullet proof, but I've had two-foot (or more) itis for a while. This week the engine's charging system d...

Miami Herald Reports Stolen 13-foot Boat Used to go to Cuba

November 11 In a reverse of which direction boat traffic usually travels in the Florida Straits, a man stole a vessel from the Keys and headed to, and landed in, Cuba, authorities say. Unlike Cuban migrants who make it to the Keys, Shawn Michael Luskey, 38, will be repatriated to face a felony char...
