Re: New RULE-brand Centrifugal Pump
its undisputable that it is better but its disputable how much better it is. ABYC won't put out a standard without a good reason. But is it necessary in this application? I don't know. Probably not.

Re: 17 SSL Four Questions on Water on Deck
[The conditions described as three-foot waves were] not that bad. Well behind the inlet. Just uncomfortable. Saw a few other [Boston Whaler boats], too. My [earlier post] does sound like I'm mis-stating [the sea state] a bit. [The actual seas were] mostly 1 to 2-foot chop with a few 3-footers. Not v...

Re: New RULE-brand Centrifugal Pump
When you say to install two hose clamps in opposing directions does that mean the screw heads should face in opposite directions? If so, what is the reasoning behind that suggestion? If not, please explain what you mean. Yes, that is what I meant. But thinking about it, I don't think bilge hoses ty...

jimh, thats exactly why I have a 2000gph pump and not something smaller (on the sailboat). I also have a backup hand operated pump rated at 28gpm. To be 100% though, I should have a second electric bilge pump. Just buying time in case I pop a through hull or get holed. Thanks for the detailed explan...

17 SSL Four Questions on Water on Deck
I took out my 17 SSL to Ocean City. I had four adults onboard, all grown men, so [the crew weight] was the most weight I have had onboard. Wave height was substantial, perhaps 3-feet, typical inshore wave periods. Basically choppy but no problem. As you know, lots of 3-knot currents in this area. As...

[I have] realized a few things: —My 17 SSL boat’s current upholstery, while in serviceable condition, is bleached white from aging. The bow cushion is the original color, but had been replaced more recently than anything attached to the boat, looks so much better. —[Great Lakes Skipper, the vendor w...

I would lowball that boat or walk away. Too much work for me - I'd sand off all the paint then revarnish the wood, which will just take FOREVER. I may mount [the VHF Marine Band Radio] on the port dash. When I don't have guests and I have crew, [port dash] can be a communications station. I'll just [mount the radio] on top of the console.

I have a rule 2000gph pump for my sailboat. The pump itself works well but their float switch is garbage. If you need to cut SS tubing, you can always go with a angle grinder. Be careful and watch the heat, as you will change its corrosion resistance properties if you get it too hot. Go slow with lots of breaks.

Checklist for Buying Classic 17-footer
There are a few boats in the 16/17 hull models that I want to check out. A MONTAUK 17 and its derivatives are cool because I might be able to push up the console towards the bow about 8-inches and add lateral seats for passengers. A SUPER SPORT 17 classic is cool because it'll appeal to more people ...

New to whalers but not new to offshore. I second the advice for barrier coat. Not that you really need it if you aren't leaving the boat in all year, but its nice to get it done before you get any bottom paint on there. if you aren't confident with paint and finishing, maybe leave barrier coat to th...

Gotcha, I get what you are talking about. I restored a 1974 30 foot sailboat over one winter. It looks sparkling now, but I definitely don't want to repeat it.
