Re: The Rise of Very Powerful Outboard Engines

That info regarding the emissions requirement differing between the two engine types is interesting. I wasn’t aware of that. I believe a major contribution to the rise of the larger outboards is the rise in popularity of large center console boats for offshore fishing purposes that require such outb...

Re: 1973 Montauk Repower. Fisherman

I re-powered my 1970 last year with a 2017 Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE. My boat is only used for fishing. The motor so far has been great to me. I put 215 hours on it the first season. I don’t know what species you fish ,lure types you use or desired trolling speeds. I can tell you with mine I can troll f...

Re: 1970 16-footer with 90-HP

I just wanted to post a follow up to this thread in case anyone was interested or ever encountered the same concern. I’m currently using my previously mentioned stainless steel 13.75 x 15-pitch TURNING POINT propeller with a Mercury FLO-TORQ III hub successfully without the chatter noises. Previousl...

Re: Trailers

I went through almost the same scenario when I first bought my Whaler . I eventually just folded and bought a brand new Venture bunk trailer. The benefits to a new trailer are the reliability, no DMV headaches, and resale value. Having a newish trailer with paperwork is a good selling point if you p...

Re: 1970 16-footer with 90-HP

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I’m going give another Aluminum prop a try when I launch the boat in April. I’ll most likely try a Mercury black max 13.25x17 and take it from there.

Re: VERADO Replace OEM Power Trim Motor

If you happen to have a MIG welder or can borrow one from a friend, I usually deal with broken/ rounded off bolts by welding a nut to the top of the stripped bolt. I lay the new nut on top of the suspect bolt and weld them together through the hole of the new nut. Then you can use a socket or open en...

Re: 1970 16-footer with 90-HP

I’ve checked out the the threads with others combos with the classic hull and various motors and props. Most seem to be in the high 30’s low 40’s with a 90hp outboard. When using the stainless 13.75x15 prop my boat was able to hit 40.5mph.The acceleration was outstanding from all speeds and motor ra...

Re: 1970 16-footer with 90-HP

Thanks Phil for your input I appreciate it. I think you may have missed few key problems that I’m having that Were mentioned previously in the thread though.( not trying to be rude at all). The main concern is that my 2017 Mercury Fourstroke with 2.07 standard gear case is not really agreeing with t...

Re: 1970 16-footer with 90-HP

Thanks once again for the replys and info. I think I’m going to give an Aluminum Mercury 13x15 4 blade Black Max propeller a shot. I’m willing to sacrifice top end speed in order to keep the boat quiet at idle speed and maintain good acceleration. I rarely ever run the engine to 6000 rpm. I like run...

Re: 1970 16-footer with 90-HP

Thank you very much for the reply and I appreciate that you cleared up my original post. I’ll be mindful of the layout when posting again. The hub kits I have tried are as follows: -Original Turning Point hub (Apearred to be a Flo-Torque 2 copy) this hub was included with Propeller. - Mercury Flo-To...

1970 16-footer with 90-HP

Last year I re-powered my [modified 1970 NAUSET 16] with a 2017 Mercury 90 FOURSTROKE with standard gear case and 2.07:1 gear ratio. This modified 16-footer lacks all the original furniture. It has: --a small fiberglass console -- a flip cooler bench seat --12 gallon fuel tank mounted in the stern -...
