[The runaway boat] doesn't look that far from shore, but, when you're not in the best shape, fully dressed, in cold water, and possibly injured from being ejected, [to make it to shore is] probably a tough swim. Another case of loose steering rod nut?

I recently sold my 2008 Crown Victoria P71 that I used to tow the Dauntless 15 for about four years.

I now use my wife's 2015 Subaru Outback. It has done great so far. I think it is rated for 2800 pounds so I wouldn't hesitate using it to tow the slightly larger boats you are considering.

After taking some measurements and trying to picture it installed, I just placed the order for the largest one they offer. Most of these are out of stock, hopefully it won't take too long to get. Now on to making the bow filler.

That is a much better angle akwalker, you can actually see the throw bag being deployed at about 0:27 into the video in your link. They realized the boat was going after them but a little too late. Good thing none of the rescue personnel were injured. I guess the collision disabled the Whaler.

Given enough time between swells (15+ seconds), it is not that bad.

Last Friday, I made it to Santa Cruz island in a little over an hour in my Dauntless 15. The speed was around 15 to 17-nautical-miles-per-hour. NOAA showed swells of up to six feet rolling through the gap between the islands.

That is one of my "home harbors". Yes, entering that way in high surf is not advised and should be timed. The operator was obviously oblivious to this and tried to push through it. Although it is shallow in that area, I do not think there are any spots where it is "that" shallow....

If you plan on using [the boat you will purchase] in the ocean, make sure you get a model that allows you to drive comfortably standing up. My Dauntless 15 does well in our coastal waters and on occasional island trips.

Great input Jim. Although my radio is still fairly new and has DSC, upgrading the radio to include AIS may make more sense than getting the AIS receiver. I will consider the two options and go with the best one for me.
