Preventing below-the-water-line blisters, 1972 Katama
There is at least one area of small blisters along the water line of our 1972 Katama (16' 7"). The Katama is trailered now, but I would like the option of leaving it in the water for up to a month between haulouts during the boating season, roughly June - October. The waters involved are Lake O...

1972 Katama 16 steering cable routing
Last year I replaced the steering cable on my 1972 KATAMA 16. I routed the new steering cable through the center tunnel because that's where the old one was routed. However, the Katama console would allow routing the steering cable down the starboard side, behind the rail, to the transom. It seems t...

Re: 1970 KATAMA 16 Restoration
I have a 1972 Katama I bought last year. I wish the Montauk console had come in my boat instead of the factory Katama console. My experience with the seats on front of the Katama console are that they are much too low for older folks to use. I also find the Katama seat base also make the narrow 11-i...

Re: 1972 Katama White All-round Lamp Storage
Thank you for the information, and for the terminology [revision]. The pole storage clips are on order. I will try different locations for storage. I wouldn't mind shortening the pole I bought to make it easier to stow, but I want to be law-abiding in this matter. How long was the original all-round...

1972 Katama White All-round Lamp Storage
I just bought a replacement pole lamp for the 1972 Katama I bought last year. The pole is 0.75-inch stainless steel, 55 inches long. Once I had installed the pole, I immediately wondered where I would stow it—a little late to think about storage, I admit. I would like information on the factory stor...

Re: MT-3 with 2007 Mercury 30-HP
The Owner's Manual and Service Manual for the outboard arrive today. Perhaps one of them will provide information. The Seastar site throws up a reoccurring invitation to chat, but apparently I would have to join Facebook to use it. I will look for an e-mail address. Another possibility to have the q...

Re: Katama 16 Bow Bouncing on Trailer
Thanks for the replies. I will try a combination of the suggestions. I will see if I can orient the winch so the strap comes to and from the top of the spool when in use instead of the bottom. That will bring the bow eye much closer to the bow stop, and it will require lowering the combo winch/bow s...

MT-3 with 2007 Mercury 30-HP
After reading threads here about the cost and benefits of re-plating and otherwise rejuvenating MORSE MT-2 controls, I decided to replace the MT-2 and cables. I like the classic style of the MT-2, and so I prefer to buy and install a new MT-3-- if that is a practical alternative. . The boat has a 20...

1972 Katama 16 Retaining Bow Locker Hatch
[On my 1972 KATAMA 16 the boat came to me with the ] bow locker hatch without any attachment hardware and bungee. I ordered a direct replacement hardware kit. I mounted one new pad eye onto the plywood using the two existing screw holes. When attempting to mount the other pad eye inside the locker, ...

Katama 16 Bow Bouncing on Trailer
On the two trips I have made towing my recently acquired 1972 Katama 16, I noticed [the bow of the boat is bouncing on the trailer] when going over bumps. On the first trip I attributed the banging to the hitch ball and coupler. After that first trip I adjusted the ball clamp and hoped for improveme...

Thanks Jim, that gauge installation is nicely done. At least the top of the Katama console provides ample space if one chooses to use it.

Re: Gauge placement on 1972 Katama console
Thanks Don! I understand very well what you describe, well enough to build or have built something similar. I'm just surprised it is needed. I feel I must be overlooking what the original design intent was, since mounting them either vertically below the steering wheel or horizontally on the console...

Gauge placement on 1972 Katama console
My 1972 Katama came to me with no gauges, and I think none were ever installed, except for a speedometer mounted on a bracket on on the top horizontal part of the console. I intend to add a tachometer, a water pressure gauge or an engine temperature gauge, and a voltmeter. Mounting them on the small...

Re: 1972 KATAMA Hull Weight
Thanks guys. Based on your advice, I won't go looking for trouble. I haven't found any soft spots in the deck or hull. I'll focus on filling screw holes and patching chipped spots and any other locations that look like water can enter the hull.

1972 KATAMA Hull Weight
My 1972 Katama 16 is now an almost-stripped hull sitting on the trailer. The engine was parted out and the console and other bits are temporarily sorted and stored. The hull, with lifting eyes, bow navigation light, rub rail, and Norman pin, weighs 660-lbs. This weight is much better than I feared a...

Re: Pending owner of 1972 Katama
OK! The boat is ours, and in our driveway. The front seats actually seem fairly solid. There is a hole in the fiberglass that I can stick a finger into in the anchor locker and it is wet underneath. The horn works and the compass still floats and spins. The boat used to have a fly top (is that the r...

Re: Pending owner of 1972 Katama
That is a NICE looking original Katama. We had one years ago and loved it. Amazing, lightweight hull (bare hull without console and seats only weighed 500 pounds). The Katama was one of the 1st Boston Whalers to have maintenance free fiberglass console and seating. Does it still have the original 2...

Re: Pending owner of 1972 Katama
The Chrysler outboard engine might have residual value for parts or for repair to someone who was a fanatic for old and unusual outboard engines. Before throwing into a scrap heap, see if there is anyone who would want it. I am hoping the marina we will use can help make that happen. They trade in ...

Re: Pending owner
Wow, [the actual model being a KATAMA is] a surprise! Thanks very kindly, biggie. I will update the first post to correctly ID the boat. I will talk a few marinas to see who in the area might be interested in the engine. Part of my interest in the actual weight is from fear of significant water intr...

Pending owner of 1972 Katama
This is my first post. This forum is a wonderful resource. I just put earnest money down on a 1972 Katama (thanks to biggiefl for correcting my ID of the boat). The seller is finding his registration papers, etc so we can finish the transaction, I can get the boat and trailer registered, and bring i...
