Re: 1963 16-footer Project

Agreed my thoughts exactly. The existing steering wants to be over to the starboard side to make room for the cable to loop to the side and down into the tunnel. I am not too familiar with my options to change that. Ideally I would like the binnacle next to the steering wheel on the new face. I am l...

Re: 1963 16-footer Project

I am not going to install a rub rail in 2020. I have run out of time and plans have changed. There are supply chain problems and borders closed. I tried to just get the hull in reasonable shape, mount the jack plate and engine, refill the foam, and patch the hole in the splash well. The existing [ru...

Re: 1963 16-footer Project

That I got out this tube was lucky; the tube was falling apart. drain-tube-small.jpg I was amazed the transom wood looked so good. The foam felt wet, but the moisture didn't seem to absorb in. The foam is very firm and dried out well. vacuum-to-hull-small.jpg I never did get any moisture out of the ...

Re: 1963 16-footer Project

Thanks Jim. The [FAQ answer] is very useful and detailed. Just what I needed. The old tube was hard enough to remove, I wouldn't want it sealed in too good.

Re: 1963 16-footer Project

The boat is pretty much sanded down, all the topside and bottom paint removed. Still some hand sanding along the chines and difficult to access areas. Generally looking pretty good . Dusty process for sure. Used Vaseline on the mask to seal the beard and though it was uncomfortable it sealed the mas...

Re: Seven Questions on Exhaust Lower Inner Housing

[I reposted these questions from Rick's initial post on another topic which was moved to a new discussion--jimh] Re the exhaust lower inner housing: I would want to know the root cause of that repeated failure. It sounds like a design fault and if that is the case the dealer should see lots of these...

"when the Yamaha dealer mounted the 2018 90-HP on the 1960 NAUSET 16 in 2018, they had to mount the lower bolts into the engine well; they cut a 5-inch hole, dug out the foam back to the bolts, fastened them, then put an inspection cover over the opening." Oh no. I thought I was the only o...

Re: Water Pump Impellers Service Life

Great points on launch site grit, turbid waters from run off, low water level use, salt deposits from salt water use--all introduce risk to the cooling system function. They are all good reasons for the preventive maintenance task of inspection and replacement. Any preventative maintenance task intr...

Water Pump Impellers Service Life

I have a question regarding the water pump impeller. The outboard I am thinking of buying has an recommended interval of 300 hours between impeller replacement cycles. Q1: If the boat has only run in fresh water why would one need to change the impeller at 300-hours--or for that matter at all? [To j...

I would like to report the boat is 25% sanded but I have barely started. The delay is respiratory protection. Re: 1963 16-footer Project

Jimh--there are two ways to interpret the serial number that didn't match any serial numbers listed in the 16/17-foot Hull reference article. One would be to drop the 0 at the end to 5 digits and the second would be to change the number contained in the middle of the number ie. change the first zero...

Re: 1963 16-footer Project

Jimh I interpreted the 302990 as 30299 which would in the article you wrote shows serial numbers 1962-1963 [are in the range] 30000 thru 31499.

You are correct: 1970 or 1963 [the year of the boat’s production] makes little difference.

Re: 1963 16-footer Project

Jimh , the serial number is the number on the bill of sale labelled serial number. It differs from the hull identification number aka serial number that is stenciled on the transom inside the splash guard. The stenciled number [begins] 3A2 compared to the bill of sale which was written as [beginning...

Re: 1963 16-footer Project

As usual, I go back through the information I have already read a number of times and discover more nuggets of knowledge--thanks to Jimh. I found the stencil number which differs from the bill of sale. The boat is a 1970 not a 1963. Now instead of an early classic I feel like I have a worn down end-...

Re: 1963 16-footer Project

Thanks tp Rich and Jimh. My investigation shows the transom is solid. I am back to leaving the notch and just using a jack plate as advised in the earlier post. I might even name the boat "the notch". I will likely just start sanding the bottom prepping to spray new gel coat. Looks like I ...

Re: 1963 16-footer Project

I hate the notch. Yes I have taken a particular disliking for the notch. It screws up the mounting options big time. even for a jack plate. mounting holes are 3 inches down from the notch and 4 inches from the original top. The temple calls for less than two inches from the original top. I have no e...

Re: Montauk Hull Damage Assessment

Can you weigh the boat?

If you think the hull could have absorbed a lot of water then the weight should be higher than specification.

I don't like the sound of your resistance test. I would expect infinite resistance but perhaps the resin is conductive or some such simple explanation.

Thanks to all. The decision is unanimous: the lower holes get repaired, the cavity filled, and hole patched to as close as original as possible. cavitysmall.jpg The notch is 1-inch deep, and the upper engine mount bolts are 4-inches from the top of the original top and 3-inches from the top of the n...

Thanks for the pictures [showing a] properly mounted outboard. The two top mounting bolts appear considerably lower on my boat, and that may create another problem. Re: 1963 16-footer Project

Thanks for the info. The bottom paint does not match the spec dimensions and yes it looks low in the stern to me as well. I believe the last engine was a 2 stroke. I did not notice the notch in the transom. I have no idea how many times the boat has been modified or repowered over its 55 years of se...

1963 16-footer Project

I believe I have a 1963 16-foot Boston Whaler. I purchased the boat from the Canadian Coast Guard, Prince Rupert BC. I am told the boat was used, and abused by Canadian Fisheries. The hull has been modified over the years with a newer seat and console, home-built rail, and windshield. A Yamaha 90 HP...
