Re: 1986 OUTRAGE 18 Replace Deck with PVC Sheet; New Fuel Tank
UPDATE JULY 2021. The 1985 OUTRAGE 18 is running great. The fuel tank is dry. The deck still looks good, is super-stiff, and no rot is possible. All boat systems are good. In retrospect, the fuel tank should have been fabricated 4-inches shorter to leave room at the aft end to install a deck access...

Re: West System Epoxy
This winter I undertook repairs using epoxy resin. I was pleased with the ease of use and dispensing of the WEST six10 epoxy. It comes in a standard sized caulk tube and worked well for me in filling many transom holes in my boat. I followed this process: ⋅ Over-drill existing hole to expo...

Optimal time of year to buy a used outboard engine
What time of year is best for selection and value when buying used outboard engines? To my mind, influential factors would include: (1) winter vs summer and (2) repower season (spring) vs non-repower season (the assumption being that more good take-offs are on the market. I think December is best fo...

Fiberglass resin coloration of various years of Boston Whaler Boats
I have recently been undertaking some fiberglass repairs; as a result I have had opportunity to become aware of the fiberglass resin properties of the structure of my respective hulls (listed below): 1991 Boston Whaler 21 Walkaround - resin is red in color 1987 Boston Whaler 18 Outrage - resin is bl...

Re: FS: 1987 Outrage 18 "Project" for $4,500 in Florida
For others benefit; I went to see this project Outrage 18 a few months ago, in person. I found the hull to be a solid project, paused in mid-restoration, but very assumable. The work done so far was careful and well executed and with quality (west systems) materials. The motor is in really nice shap...

Replacing bilge pump with larger model; any reason not to proceed?
My boat : 1991 21' Walkaround Background : In replacing a bilge pump, hose and thru hull; I would like to upgrade the current 500 gph Rule pump to a 1100gph unit. Primarily for extra peace of mind/upgraded pumping capacity. This involves an up-sizing of the hose from 3/4" internal diameter to ...

Re: Interpreting Alarm Sounder Meaning
I would humbly submit that 4,000 rpms is too tame a test drive to determine if you have a high speed overheat. Run it at 5,000 rpms for 20 minutes or so and see if you get an overheat.

Re: Interpreting Alarm Sounder Meaning
Having recently been schooled in the ways of Yamaha two-stroke alarm states; here is my contribution: Assuming your Yamaha engine is a 1994 or similar vintage; the alarm could be caused by one of two states: 1. Overheat; the thermostat switch in the head closes at about 180-degrees-F. It is easy to ...

I am rolling on borrowed time with the Walmart-China tires that came on my trailer when I bought my boat a few months ago. I just ordered four Goodyear ENDURANCE tires.

Re: Using TotalBoat TOPSIDE Paint; Color Choice; Painting Non-skid
In February 2020 I painted some fish box hatches with TOTAL BOAT Topside primer and one-part WetEdge products. I have been underwhelmed by the durability of the product and wish I had chosen another solution. I should also add, I was precise in my preparation and painting, according to the manufactu...

Walkaround 21 Seats
Hello, I am now [two] months into ownership of a 1991 Walkaround 21. I am re-fitting many items, in anticipation of the coming spring boating season. One of these items is the helm and passenger seats. The boat came to me outfitted with a pair of Tempress-brand folding, white, vinyl seats fitted on ...

Re: New purchase: 1991 Walkaround 21
Thank you all for the input. I ended up taking a chance on a 2001 Yamaha 250 Ox66 EFI outboard. As previously stated, my boating budget does not allow for a newer engine. After much research and careful conversations with my mechanic. I took a calculated risk and bought a low-hour, very clean exampl...

Regarding the repower; I have decided to broaden my search from just Yamaha options, to also include Evinrude E-TEC options. Factors and thoughts which influence my search: ⋅ I am a boater-on-a-budget. New or two- or three-years old is not an option for me. Too many 529 savings plans to fu...

Re: 1991 Walkaround 21
You might want to reconsider the OX66 as they will burn some serious fuel. The HPDI 250 & 300 have a lot of problems so make sure maintained, etc, 200 is a great engine. i would look for a 225-300 4 stroke. If earlier models(pre 07) make sure exhaust midsection was upgraded or is a fresh water ...

New purchase: 1991 Walkaround 21
Hi all. I have just purchased a 1991 21 Walkaround, which I believe to be in good original condition. Here were two prior owners. The boat was kept on a trailer, although bottom painted. The boat has no engine. I intend to source a Yamaha Ox66 225 or 250 because the boat is already rigged for a Yama...
