fuel hose primer bulb would not stay firm


It almost sounds like the tank is not getting air so the fuel pump is sucking in the primer bulb on the fuel hose which could be caused by the air vent on tank being shut or clogged.

Thanks, there was definitely a learning curve with a few things. Having the old console to use as a template helped a lot and I was able to source mahogany close by. Thanks again everyone for the feedback.

If I were buying new, I'd get the E-TEC 30-HP. It is lightweight and should give you similar performance as your old 40. I'd call your local dealer and see what your options are in the short-shaft model.

Because of the set-back (tilt/trim) bracket that I have for my outboard engine, the engine is raised enough that the cable will clear the high point of the transom. With the Evinrude E-TEC engine there is only 8-lbs difference between the 40-HP (232 lbs) and the 60-HP (240 lbs). I would go with the 60-HP E-TEC; it would be a lot better for pulling the grandchildren water skiing. Also, it would be better for re-sale.

PMaine, I have a Panther tilt and trim unit with a 1973 50 hp Evinrude and the top bolts are 1 inch from the top of the transom and I've had no problems with the transom. I use big SS washers on the inside. My boat is a 1967 13' Whaler.

What would be the performance difference between an E-TEC 30 versus, for example, a HONDA BF 40 or other four-stroke-power-cycle 40-HP engine?

To buy a heavy 40-HP four-stroke engine and find out that the performance is similar to an E-TEC 30-HP engine would be a shame.
