Assess Damage to Outboard Engine Skeg

The skeg on my Mercury 90 appears to have been previously damaged and filed down by the prior owner. It's been re-contoured and is now lacking that sharp angle near the propeller and likely shortened up a bit. skeg.jpg How do I determine if the skeg is in need of a repair? Does the damage necessitat...

I've read a number of previous threads on the topic of repairing abandoned screw holes and various materials. I'd like to close some screw holes in the gunwale of my boat, as well as some soon to be abandoned holes left by a transom mounted transducer. I plan to finish the repairs with a gel coat pa...

Re: Trailering a 170 Montauk

Yet again, great advice from this forum and much appreciated. I intend to trailer in the vertical position as it seems preferred for both outboard stability and the carburetors. I will keep a close eye to ensure there is sufficient clearance for the skeg. Thanks.

Trailering a 170 Montauk

I will be trailering a 2005 170 Montauk with the original Mercury 90-HP engine on a Karavan bunk trailer on a 300-mile trip. The previous owner of the boat mentioned that a transom-saver-type support isn't necessary. He further mentioned using the tilt support lever on the engine as the correct mean...

A newer outboard engine tech who has only been working on engine with electronic fuel induction with computer controls probably won't be the best guy to work on these engines. Point noted.
