Classic Sport 13 or 15 Raising Rear Thwart Seat

Classic Sport 13 or 15 Raising Rear Thwart Seat I would like to raise the aft thwart seat for comfort and to give me some room in the future to mount a backrest under the seat. As it sits now as original from the factory on the hull rail, there is no clearance above the gas tank. In the picture [no...

Re: Converting Sport 15 to Center Console

would love to hear your alternative solutions for running the rigging without a tunnel. The only thing I can think of to keep them hidden would be a front thwart seat and mount the rigging in a tube under the seat.

Re: 15-foot Models

When I bought my whaler Jim's page here was a great resource to compare the options: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/15/models.html I am biased as have 1977 sport 15- Have ridden in the CC version a bunch too. To answer your question my quick thoughts on the 3 options (will include CC as ...

Re: Raising the Stock Seats on Classic Sport 15

I just tried to raise my seat above the risers on my 1977 sport 15. The risers are bowed out and there is only a tiny overlap on the boards so it is not safe to sit on. I am wondering what to do. I could put a wood strip screwed onto the side of the riser to extend it or add some L brackets. IMG_388...

Re: Re-finishing Mahogany

Thanks! finished product looks great!

Did you drill the thwart seat and riser out first? any tips on that process would be helpful!

One concern is my rails are not 100% vertical, I mean they are pretty close but also 30 years old...

Re: Re-finishing Mahogany

8 was the number I was going for so will see how it looks after 8 and go from there. I am varnishing over some screw holes and plan on drilling a few more when I move the seat on top of the risers. My question is what do you recommend I put on the screws or wood to seal it while putting screws into ...

Re: Re-finishing Mahogany

Got down to it today in the 70 heat wave in Boston! Started with 80 grit on the belt sander - very light touch to get the old varnish off moved to 100 on the palm then 120 on orbital. What grit do you stop at before next step? forgot to buy tackcloth and was getting late in day so decided to stop th...

Polyurethane Or Varnish

Jim and others--In the Reference section you mention that the two-part polyurethane is the most labor intensive. How can that be when you state three to six coats needed compared to varnish's 12 coats[?] In addition does not need sanding in between every-coat. Reading this, it looks like it [that is...

Re: Re-finishing Mahogany

thanks guys! I am thinking the wood would be prety good eaither way as it is in such good shape and never seen the sun covered 70% of its life. That being said the hard work is in the sanding down to bare wood, not the varnish/ rough sand repeat. Makes sense and not that much extra effort to rough i...

Re: Re-finishing Mahogany

thanks for the infomation! I guess I am still trying to figure out if I can leave the mint side (pic 3) alone. If the last stain and varnish is in perfect shape on one side. Do I need to sand it down and start over or can I just hit the top peeling (sunfacing side) and edges of the board to make sur...

Re-finishing Mahogany

I am getting ready to sand and re-varnish the mahogany on my 1977 SPORT 15. The previous owner did a great job on the wood in 2012 but did not keep it covered as well as he would have liked too. The topside wood needs to be sanded down completely but the bottom looks mint--not a scratch and has neve...

I think I will wait to drill any holes as I may add a backrest which could be a great spot for it.

Bilge Pump Wiring and Switch

Right now my 1977 Boston Whaler SPORT 15 boat's RULE 1100 automatic bilge pump is wired directly to the battery with an in-line fuse on the positive circuit that is accessible to remove in order to turn off. Is there any reason I should be changing the wiring to a three-position OFF-ON-AUTO switch? ...

Re: SPORT 15 60-HP

I have the Honda BF 60 on my 1977 sport 15. The engine had under 20 hours on it when i bought it with the boat in July ( i'm guessing 80-100 now). I could not be happier with the pair. That being said my buddy's 15 with a late 1990's Johnson 70hp 2 stroke will beat it on top end speed, however even ...

SPORT 15: Location to Stow White All-Round Lamp

I want to [stow the white all-round navigation lamp and its pole] somewhere on my Boston Whaler SPORT 15. There is no room under seat due to fuel tank. Are there any good spots I may not be thinking of?

I was going to use a Beckson clip. Or buy these nice ones with wood blocks.

I just listened to the West System podcast from continuouswave and thought it was great. Does anyone have any other marine podcasts on boat repairs, Boston Whaler boats, boat engines, or anything boat related to listen to on my commute? Thanks
