Re: Gel Coat Patch-up

I should have mentioned: if you use epoxy resin, be sure to post-cure it with some gentle heat, then wash it thoroughly in soap and water to remove any amine blush. If there is any amine blush residue, the amine will inhibit the cure of polyester resins like a gel coat polyester resin. But, as with...

Re: Gel Coat Patch-up

But get more advice, as I am not much of a gel coat application expert. I accomplished it many years ago. I described my efforts in a brief article. Thanks, Jim. I will try just one of the holes with that method and see how it goes. The gel coat does have wax in it already, so it should be good to ...

Gel Coat Patch-up

Hello. I ordered some "paint ready" desert tan gel coat to start on a few small repairs I want to make on my 1984 Montauk. I will be repairing holes placed under the outer lip of the gunwale from snaps that were screwed in for a boat cover. I will also fix a few nicks and scratches towards...

Re: Repairing Boston Whaler Hull Damage

Get a few quotes. If any of the gel coat specialists charge you $500 - $750, remember who they are and never call them back. It's a $200 job for a pro. If you are inclined for your first time, Jeff provided you with great instructions to do it on your own. Just don't forget to wetsand, buff, and pol...

Re: Repairing Boston Whaler Hull Damage

Or...you could pay a well recommended pro to do it. It will end up costing you the same amount of money after you buy all the supplies, correct color gel coat and TIME! I learned a while ago that unless you have prior experience, a pro will make your damage disappear and yours may look bad after all...

Re: Montauk Bait Tank Recommendations

I have 1984 Montauk that has a bait tank. I'm curious to see how others with a similar boat have added bait tanks to their Montauk boats. I have a Kodiak 14-gallon bait tank on mine. I'd consider going as high as 20-gallons if folks have good feedback. The current set-up works fine, but I am hoping...

Re: 1975 Montauk: Transducer Ideas

Steve--Do you have reservations about [having the cable from the SONAR transducer] going over the transom? I see [you are] in San Diego; you may eventually think about a transom mounted bait tank pump, which typically needs to go over the transom, anyhow. You can route your [cable from the SONAR tra...
