Re: Small Second Anchor

I second the vote for a Mantus.

I used a larger Mantus on my trawler when I did the Great Loop, It never failed me in from the Mississippi to Chesapeake Bay. On my 17' Dauntless I use a 2.5 lbs model M1. It holds great and it easily disassembles when stored.

Re: Non-prescription sunglasses with progressive lenses

I have had good luck getting glasses and sun glasses from Zenni. Their prices are reasonable so I have multiple pairs of sunglasses (both bi-focal and single vision) stashed at home, on my boat, in my car and at my cottage.

Re: Reset of B&G V50 Radio

A method to reset the MMSI on a B&G VHF Marine Band Class-D DSC Model V50 radio was offered by an informed end-user on a public forum . He described the procedure succinctly: Factory reset: press X and scan code 7100 and follow instructions Not having this radio myself, I cannot verify or comme...

Re: LiFePO Batteries for Marine Use

Jim--keep in mind when your are comparing LiFePO to Lead Acid batteries that Ampere-hour ratings do not compare directly. You should not take a Lead Acid battery below 50% state-of-charge or you will damage it. A LiFePO battery can be taking down to almost zero without damage. So you need a 160 Ampe...

For Sale 1978 15 Sport

For Sale: 1978 15’ Sport with 1978 70hp Evinrude motor. My whaler fleet has recently expanded to 5 boats and I need to bring it back to a reasonable level. This is a one owner boat, I bought it new 39 years ago. It still has it original motor which runs great and starts easily. Included is a Mills C...

Kidde Fire Extinguisher Recall

Kidde has issued a recall on 134 models of fire extinguishers manufactured between 1973 and 2017. These models may not function properly when needed to fight a fire. There has been one death from this so far. Read the information from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission in the link ...

Re: FS: 3 Boston Whaler Helm Chairs (NEW)

Buoy,

I spoke with Joe on the phone Wednesday and reached a deal for two of the seats. He has received and cashed a check for a 20% deposit to hold the seats until I can come by for them at the end of the month.

What deal did you strike with him?

Free lockage on Canada Canals in 2017

It seems that Canada has announced that lockage on their canal systems in 2017 will be free. Next year could be a good year to plan a trip on the Trent Severn or Rideau canal systems.

[silly expression deleted] Weather Web Page

I recently came across this weather web page. I find it is the best I have seen to get a feel for what is going on with winds and waves on both a large scale (national and global) and a small scale (local). I have added it to my favorites and will be consulting if frequently when planning my boating...

Re: Burt Lake Speed Test

I enjoyed that run across. My recollection is White Water was the only other boat that kept their speed up all the way across the lake. While I did not make note of my top speed, I do know that earlier in the summer I hit a shade of 50 statue mph while running the St.Mary's River with Manic Moment. ...

Re: 20 inch shaft on a Classic 13

I prefer Evinrude for several reasons. Initially it was because I had had such a great experience with the 1978 Evinrude 70-HP engine I bought new on my first whaler (a 15 Sport). That engine is still going strong. I cannot say the same for some of the other outboards I have had. When I started keep...

Re: Show Us Your Whaler

Dutchman- Yes, you absolutely can run on a plane in the Crooked River. There are some sections with cottages that you need to drop down to no-wake speeds. But there are two long sections with some sharp turns that you can run on plane. The other caveat is you need to drop down to no-wake speeds when...

A 20-inch-shaft Engine on a Classic 13

Due to some winter damage to my outboard done by a nesting mouse, I decided it was time to re-power my classic 13-footer. I wanted an E-TEC 25, but it is not available with power trim and tilt in a 15-inch shaft. I had to modify the transom on my 13 to handle a 20-inch shaft. Fortunately my local Ev...

This my inland boat. It is usually kept on a hoist in front of my cottage. The Dauntless 17 is an ideal family lake boat.
