Q3: do you not trust your vehicle manufacturer's tow rating?

If the vehicle is in good condition use it to tow your Montauk home. Before towing ensure the tires are fully inflated on both your vehicle and the boat trailer.

What is too much power? There are thousands of boats successfully operating with more power than the boat is rated for. I believe he weight of the engines is a more critical factor than the horsepower. Horsepower is easily controlled by throttle position.

There is virtually no such thing as too much horsepower. There is a problem with an under powered boat. There are things an under powered boat can not do which a boat with enough power can do. An under powered boat is difficult to sell and the selling price would be much lower than expected.

Be aware that KING StarBoard marine plastic lacks strength and may not be the best material to use for thwart seats. It will bend under load. Some form of added reinforcement will be needed.

I would have doubts about advice from a salesman who recommends an engine which needs trim tabs. A properly powered 15 foot boat should not need trim tabs.

A 13 foot donor hull to provide a center section could be an alternative, although the suggestion to simply shorten an Outrage 17 would make more sense as would almost any alternative beginning with "forget about it".

A major reason I connected my SmartCraft information to an MFD was because the SC1000 gauges were so difficult to use. I never used the gauge(s) after connecting to the MFD.

Your profile indicates you are on Padre Island, TX. Not all states require a over-wide permit to tow 10-foot-wide loads. Before rejecting a wide boat I would double check with DMV.

You are correct, I was referring to the years from 1953 through 1962. In 1962 I completed several months of technical training on construction equipment and diesel engines. Learning how mechanical devices actually worked and the application of physics was an eye opener.

I believe the service life of virtually everything on boats is improved by mostly fresh water use. Salt water is an incredibly damaging medium.

Jim and Phil, thank you for your replies. I'm not in love with the Mercury control and can certainly look into the classic Morse control. It will need to be a side mount device with the required electrical properties. I'll have to see what I can learn from Google or Bing.
