[What are the advantages and disadvantages] of using a three-wire Wye-configuration stator versus a Delta-configuration stator in a permanent magnet electrical generation system? I have searched the internet high and low can find many references to the two types but nothing that explains the benefit...

E-TEC Engine Starting Battery Specification Speculation
Any opinions as to why the [engine cranking battery for an Evinrude E-TEC engine] MCA rating is as high as it is? [Note: while not mentioned here, the MCA rating for an E-TEC V6 engine battery is recommended to be 1,000-MCA for use in temperatures below 32-degrees-F or extreme service, or 845-MCA fo...

Re: E-TEC Engine Charging Output
If the electrical power to recharge a battery is stated as 50 amps, at nominally 12 volts, that is 600 watts. Comparable favorably with most any outboard motor using a permanent magnet generator. Now if the output to the motor is 83 amps, at 55 volts, that is a serious electrical generation system. ...

How does the boat sit in the water?
How does the boat perform?
I had a 1998 Aquasport 215 Explorer and swapped to a Yamaha F200 from a Mercury 175 EFI; the boat rode just fine. Published weight of the F200 without the propeller or oil was over 600-lbs.

Re: Engine Rating for Maximum Battery Capacity

I suspect that Mitsubishi makes the electrical stuff for Yamaha. Would be hard to find Fujimoto at Mitsubishi who might ...

Now what would you make of an outboard motor maker publishing a maximum capacity value for a starting battery? I am having a hard time wrapping my mind around a battery being too large.

Re: Merc 60 HP Fuel usage general comment
Not a good idea to run a fuel injected model out of gasoline. The electric fuel pump is lubricated and cooled as gasoline flows through it. The pump can become damaged when run dry. Next time you go to use the motor make sure that you use the primer ball to completely refill the fuel system before y...

Is [the smoke puff for a duration of three to four seconds during engine starting due to] the fuel enrichment adding more gasoline? Re: Variation in Fuel Used Monitoring
I called and talked to Kevin at Floscan, [who is a] very nice man and very helpful. Of their four typical fuel flow sensors, he said [their model] 20B will provide reliable readings down to 0.2 to 0.3 gallons per hour. He indicated they have other sensors that will provide accurate results below the...

Re: Variation in Fuel Used Monitoring
Seems strange that two devices would do simple math and not come up with the same answer. I actually prefer a fuel flow measurement type of system (Floscan for instance) that actually measures physical fuel flow as to opposed to a calculated fuel flow system. Many variables in the calculated system ...

Re: reliability of a 2004 Yamaha 40 hp fourstroke engine
A 2004 F40 has a smaller idle jet than did earlier F40's. It can be a bit fussy then when it comes to starting easily and idling well. Ethanol does not make life any easier. If you were to have a carburetor problem then many have been known to install a larger-size idle jet. Otherwise, the F40 is as...

Re: 1993 Yamaha 70-HP: Interpretation of Aural Alert

Re: Theft of Gear From Boats Stored at Cheasapeake Whalertowne
I did not think there would be such a lucrative black market for Brunswick's outboard engine electronic controllers. They must be expensive and prone to needing replacement. Somewhat expensive depending upon the model. $600 for a smaller motor to over $4,000 for a 350 Verado . Prone to the need to ...

Re: Evinrude Alternator Output
The PMA is driven from the flywheel directly, so no losses in pulleys and belts. There is no exciting current needed so it works without need to have a battery. Did you read my article? It explains all of this. The more modern automotive alternators are using PMA techniques. Wind-driven alternators...

Re: Evinrude Alternator Output
Thanks. My question was with respect to the G2 Evinrude 250/300 models. 50-Amperes available to charge a battery, if needed, it is.
Anyone care to guess why the total output of the [alternator] is stated if, from a user's standpoint, it is mostly irrelevant? Or is it relevant?

Shifting from forward into reverse while the boat is traveling at speed is an operator error that can result in induced engine damage. It is not a warrantable defect. Re: Restarting Engine After Running Fuel Tank Dry
Allowing [the engine] to run without fuel to lubricate and cool [the electric pump] can cause damage to an electric fuel pump. If the boat tank is allowed to become empty then no gasoline will be pumped to the VST. The electric fuel pump may become damaged. Some are more lucky or less lucky than oth...

Re: VERADO and Hydro-lock
Consider yourself lucky that you got the motor replaced at no charge the first time that it happened. Some Verado owners have not been so fortunate. Yamaha usually will cover the repair one time only with the caution that if it happens a second time the customer is on his own. This is a known and we...
