Re: 1988 Montauk 17: Battery Location Survey

I have a 1999 Alert 17 which is the same hull as a Montauk. When I converted it to a center console this winter I moved the battery to the center console from the starboard stern. My boat has a Tohatsu 6-HP auxiliary engine mounted directly to the transom on the Port side and it weighs 59-lbs. After...

Re: Cutting out rigging tube on 1999 Alert 17

Update on the rigging tube on my 1999 Alert 17. This morning I found the front opening of the rigging tube, it was at the very back of the marked rectangle on the deck where the center console sits. It is not a finished sump like in the back of the boat instead it comes to the deck surface via a 45 ...

Re: Cutting out rigging tube on 1999 Alert 17

Just to clarify my 1999 Alert 17 being a side console from the factory never had the rigging tube opened up like a center console does. All the rigging was run down the starboard side behind the side rail.

Cutting out rigging tube on 1999 Alert 17

I am in the process of converting my 1999 Alert 17 from a side console to a center console. I started at the back and cut out the rigging tube in the sump and it went great. Next I went to the front where there is a rectangular mark on the deck where the front of the rigging tube is supposed to be a...

Re: New Engine Purchase Advice

I have a Yamaha F70 on my 1999 Alert 17 and I love it. [Boat speed is] about 37-MPH at full throttle. [The Yamaha F70 engine] starts easily and almost makes gasoline--the most fuel efficient motor I ever had. I have had 15-HP-engines that seemed to use more gasoline. Were I you, I would shop around ...

Ken, I did my own installation of the Garmin. I did look at the Simrad. Both are nice units, but I think the Garmin was more user friendly in my case. I got my Garmin from Gil Travis at Semperfishing Marine Electronics and he helped me with my choice. Gil is very knowledgeable and will talk with you...

Re: Outboard Engines: Rebuild or Buy New

In my case I had a 2005 Mercury 75-HP two-stroke-power-cycle outboard engine. I re-powered with a 2014 Yamaha F70. I liked my Mercury 75, and it ran great; but it seemed that every summer something would happen to it, and I would be waiting a couple of weeks for parts and repair. The engine ran fine...

TransFueler--the Tohatsu Sail Pro comes with a high-thrust propeller and an alternator; the regular Tohatsu 6-HP engine does not have those features.

I have a 1999 Alert 17--same hull as the Montauk 17--and I boat exclusively on Lake Erie. I have a Tohatsu 6-HP Sail Pro kicker on my boat. It will push my boat to 6.1-MPH with my main engine in the down position and 6.3-MPH with the main engine raised. I have had this engine on for three seasons, a...

You might want to check out Panga Marine in Florida, they make aftermarket center consoles that are much nicer than the ones Carolina Skiff makes and their prices are very reasonable IMO. Just google Panga Marine in Florida. They have several consoles to choose from.

Re: Kicker for classic Montauk 17

At 366-lbs for your F75 Yamaha, a kicker is out of the question IMO; there is already too much weight on the back of the Montauk 17. If your battery is in the rear of your boat I would move it under the console to transfer some of the weight. Also a Honda 2.3 hp is not enough horsepower as a backup,...

Re: MONTAUK 17 Re-power: Yamaha or E-TEC

I am very happy with the Yamaha F70 on my 1999 Alert 17. I really like the light weight and the effect it has on the handling of the boat. If I had the need for 90-HP, the E-TEC 90 would be on the back of my boat. At 320 lbs the E-TEC 90 is still light enough to not affect the handling and seaworthi...

Re: 1987 Montauk 17 E-TEC 90

Years ago when the E-TEC 90 first came out there were a lot of posts on this subject and the hot prop was the Stilletto Advantage 13.25 x 15 mounted (I'm pretty sure) two-holes-up on the transom with no jack plate. The Stilletto Advantage props were said to run one-size bigger than they were marked....

Just another little tip, I also use these on the bottom of my cooler to keep it from sliding around and again no holes need to be drilled. 1 strip in each corner keeps my cooler full of walleye and ice secure.

Re: 1983 15-footer Maximum Transom Weight

I have a 1999 Alert 17 and I have a Yamaha F70 and a Tohatsu 6 hp kicker. The total weight is 319 lbs and it is just right, I agree with jimh and Boston Whaler with the 330 pound limit for that hull and I presume that the weight limit for the 15 footer is also right. Re: Transom weight for an old 17

[I concur with] what Buckda said; he is exactly right I know from first-hand experience. I changed to a 257-lb Yamaha F70 and my boat handles like a sports car-- the lighter the better, and 400-lb is too heavy.

Re: 1988 Montauk Evinrude Re-power

I think you made a wise decision. A 320-lbs outboard is just right for a Montauk 17, 400-lbs is too much weight on the rear of a Montauk 17. I know this from experience. You should be very happy with the regular E-TEC 90.
