Re: Boat Hull Interior Cleaning

Here we go: --heat may or may not kill mold. If I give it a kiss, my lips at 98.6 degrees won't kill it, but if I take a blow torch to it, it will be killed; --getting hit by a car may or may not kill me. If the car is moving at 6 inches per day, I'll get pushed, but if it's going 150 MPH, I'm in tr...

Re: Boat Hull Interior Cleaning

I do not recommend using bleach. Also, bleach does NOT kill mold. Remember that the non-skid and interior are gelcoat just like the outside and must be cared for and protected. [MARY KATE ON-OFF] is about the most aggressive product I've used and almost always works. When it doesn't, I've found the ...

Re: Book Release Update

At $20 it's a 'No Brainer.' Just the guys on the Whaler enthusiast websites should be 10s of thousands of copies sold. And that's if they only buy 1. Thanks for making the effort.. from a third person perspective, it wasn't an easy endeavor.

Looking forward to receiving mine,

Re: Montauk, Suzuki DF90

The E-TEC 90 can pull me up on one ski with three adults in the boat and coolers. That's with a 17-pitch Viper. I'm 180 lbs and in my older age, I get up with my back foot out. Anyone that's ever skied for real knows that slalom speed is 36-MPH, and I will tell you that even with the bimini up, we a...

Re: For Sale by owner late 60's 13' Sourpuss Boston area

The Sourpuss was a center steer 13' model and it started with the transition hulls in '71/'72 that had the 15" transom with blue interior but with the sink style splash well and the new smirked bow. It lasted a few years into the desert tan, 20" transom hulls but I don't know when it ended...

Re: 1988 Montauk Evinrude Re-power

You want the 17" inch Viper. It's worth more than 2 aluminum props. The performance difference is significant and the fact that you're mounting 2 holes up MANDATES that you run a cupped stainless prop. Yes, the medium gearcase props from your old motor will work on a 20" long shaft E-tec 9...

Re: 1988 Montauk Evinrude Re-power

Yes. Have [the installer] mount [the E-TEC 90-HP engine] at least two-holes-up. They will argue that it's too high. Trust all of us, they're wrong. The best propeller from BRP for that application is the Viper 17.--Chris

Thanks. That's my attempt at a year-2000 Bearcat. I think it works well with the classic blue and mahogany interior boats. I explained the details not long ago;

Re: 1988 Montauk Evinrude Re-power

I've got the in-line three-cylinder and never felt I needed more power. No matter how much load you put on this combination, it never seems to be laboring. As far as longevity, the E-TEC 90 has been around for over a decade, it's sorted out, and it has a great track record. The 16 hull is tender wit...

Re: The Finest Hours

I saw the movie yesterday. The story is compelling. Every scene depicting the engine room and the Pendleton's crew and experience is, unfortunately, pure Hollywood. There are plenty of T2 tanker engineers still out there that could have been consulted about what was/wasn't possible under the curcums...

Re: Keeping Gel-Coat shiny and flexible. My Snake-oil treatment

Jeff, Gear oil is all about film strength, additives, and creating a wedge between moving parts so I'm wondering why you chose it instead of Penetrol which, I believe, is designed to soak in/penetrate in and restore the oil base for surface appearance. You know, there are many repairs/procedures for...

Re: 1975 Montauk: Transducer Ideas

The E-TEC 90, IMHO, looks like a model-year 2000 Bearcat. The cowling has slab sides. The front has a convex centerline crease, an eyebrow, and the back is sculpted. I thought that with the correct graphics and paint, it could almost look period-correct. I contacted Janis at Magicbrush about alterin...

Re: 1975 Montauk: Transducer Ideas

On the old timers, the steering cable is supported by a transom bracket with two through-bolts. When I mounted the new E-TEC, I filled in one hole and then bored the other out big enough for the transducer plug to pass through the hull. Then I added stainless clam shells inside and out and filled th...

Re: Repair of Hairline Cracks in c.1970 Gel Coat

There are two choices: --remove and replace, which is to sand down and re-fiberglass, or --seal it with LineX marine kevlar coating in Boston Whaler blue. The latter is the way to go--trust me. If it were something super rare would be the exception. Here is a SPORT 11 Sport I did three years ago. Lo...
