Re: Source for Instrument Panels, Hull Decoration
Jim, Thanks for the lead. I looked at the transfer method of labeling the panels. I don't think the transfers would be durable enough for the exposed environment of my console. I also don't think I would be able to apply the transfers "neatly" enough for my standards. A closer examination ...

Re: Source for Instrument Panels, Hull Decoration
I've refurbished my gauge panels in my 1986 Outrage. I made new panels out of "sign" aluminum stock I salvaged. I elected to not pin stripe the panels, I just couldn't get the pin stripe to apply to my satisfaction. I'm going to do the switch panels this winter. One roadblock I've run into...

Re: 1986 Outrage Wood
I learned wood identification through a life time of carpentry experience. Con Then how do you tell the difference between Teak and Mahogany? I’m a general contractor/carpenter. I am familiar with several species of wood. Different species of Fir, Redwood, Maple, Oak… Except for my boat, I don’t ha...

Re: 1986 Outrage Wood
I agree all the parts seem to be the same wood. How do you tell the difference between Teak and Mahogany? I went by one of our local wood working stores to pick up some plug cutters. They had some scraps of wood labeled Mahogany. When I brought the piece home and sanded it, the piece looked just lik...

Re: Outrage 25, Twin E-TEC: Minimalist Instrumentation
I built my own replacement panels. Scrap aluminum sourced from old road signs. Cuts easily with a regular circular saw. Cut the holes with the properly sized hole saw and my cheap $40 drill press. Primmer painted with zinc chromate primmer. Final coat with high temperature wrinkle paint.

Re: Cole Hersee M-121 replacement
Those Deutsch connectors and dust caps look perfect. What is the functional difference of the stamped vs solid pins/sockets? The proper crimpers look to be a bit pricey, so I would need to solder the pins/sockets. I usually try and avoid soldering. I am the self-appointed king of cold solder joints....

Cole Hersee M-121 replacement
My 1986 OUTRAGE 18 has a removable white all-round light lamp mounted on a pole. The connector for the wiring is a Cole Hersee M-121. When disconnected the connector on the pole section (male end) is exposed to the elements mounted in one of the rod holders under the gunwale. The other end of the co...

Tuning GAM SS-2 for Voice Channels and AIS
I am in the process of upgrading my VHF and AIS antenna. I currently have an unknown model 8’ SHAKESPEARE antenna. I want to upgrade the performance of both my VHF and AIS. I have a GARMIN AIS 600. The GARMIN AIS 600 has an internal antenna splitter, there is an antenna “in” port and a VHF “out” por...

Thanks for the info Jim. I had seen the box from Quickcable. The description of white vs off white threw me, I might order a couple to see the actual color. I have previously (a couple of months ago - May of 2016) spoken to Sue regarding the Kevlar battery straps. She no longer has the straps from t...

Re: OUTRAGE 18: Rigging E-TEC 150 with ICON EST and ICON Pro gauges
My old instrument panel had a tachometer, trim gauge and a horn button. My new instrument panel will have water pressure, engine temperature on top, the tachometer and then the trim gauge on the bottom (gauges placed in order of importance and easiest scan). None of the existing holes matched the ne...

Re: OUTRAGE 18: Rigging E-TEC 150 with ICON EST and ICON Pro gauges
As you may be aware, the console on a 1986 Outrage 18 is not a very large space. With my electronic upgrades, I had several constraints I had to deal with. Space, accessibility, upgrade ability and I wanted to make few changes I couldn’t reverse easily. The VHF and the AIS both had minimum distances...

Re: 1986 Outrage, E-TEC 150
Thanks for the information Maverick. I don’t have a T-top, just a stock OUTRAGE. My old Yamaha swung a 19” pitch propeller and most of the information I have reviewed says most others are also mounting 19” pitch propellers on new ETEC 150s with boats in my weight range. So I think that’s where I wil...

Re: 1986 Outrage, E-TEC 150
Thanks Jim, Chuck left a large footprint. Yes, a 19 pitch 3 blade stainless steel propeller seems to be the most recommended, so that’s what I have been looking to purchase. I will look at the Enertia. I hope this upgrade is all that I hope it will be (it cost more than I paid for the entire boat).

OUTRAGE 18: Rigging E-TEC 150 with ICON EST and ICON Pro gauges
My 1986 Outrage 18 started life with a 1986 Yamaha 150. I had a tachometer and a trim gauge. The Yamaha was still running strong, but a 30-year-old motor that has spent almost half its life in saltwater was just stretching my luck. I boat mostly a section of the North Coast of California with someti...

1986 Outrage, E-TEC 150
I am mounting a new E-TEC 150-HP engine with ICON Electronic Throttle and Shift (ETS) and ICON Pro Gauges on my 1986 Outrage 18. The new E-TEC replaces the 1986 Yamaha 150 that has been on the boat since it was new. I took a couple of weeks to pull the old engine and rigging--It’s going to live out ...
