Re: Stability of 13'-15' Boston Whalers

Based on the needs mentioned, a classic pre c.2000 13-foot hull would be more than adequate and much less expensive than the newer hulls. As previously stated, in the classic line the 13 and 17 have similar hulls and are much more stable than the 15. In the post classic models, the hulls are similar...

Re: Stability of 13'-15' Boston Whalers

I have a 2004 Sport 150, and of the 26 boats including four Boston Whalers I've owned, this one is by far the most stable for standing and casting (I am a fly fisherman). It's not as cool looking at the classic 15, but it's lateral stability is far better. I have it rigged as a flats style boat and ...

Second Battery Location for a 150 Sport

Without thinking this through, I mounted a Terrova trolling motor (40-lbs) on the starboard bow [of a 15-Foot Boston Whaler boat] and a second deep-cycle battery (55-lbs) in the boat's side console next to the starting battery. Now the boat lists to starboard five to ten degrees when I'm alone in th...

600 hours, especially if there's no hour meter, is a lot of hours on a motor where parts could be hard to find. Keep in mind that sellers always lie about hours. And, you don't know when the hour meter, if it has one, was installed. For the asking price (high) plus the cost of repowering you could g...

Re: Looking for First Boat

The ease of accomplishing boat launching from or loading to a trailer without assistance is really not a direct function of the boat size in boats of 16 to 18-feet length. Ease of launching is related more to the trailer set-up, the ramp being used, and the presence of a courtesy dock. A single-han...

Re: Towing with a Subaru Outback

I'm having a hard time finding tha GCWR for the 2016 Outback. What I did find on the door panel was a maximum interior capacity of 900 lbs. So, taking the curb weight of 3,814 lbs, adding 900 for the cargo, plus 3000 for the towing, give me about 7,700 lbs which I assume is close to the GCWR. I thin...

I won't often [tow a 150 SPORT with a Subaru Outback]; I have a good tow vehicle. But I will want to on occasion. My 150 Sport weighs about 1,700 lbs. Although I agree with every word above, maybe the man just wants a Boston Whaler boat. Once you get that in your head, often the only cure is to get one. Re: Looking for first boat

For your type of fishing, which is similar to mine, the only reason you'd need anything larger than a 15' or even 13' is to accommodate more people. Keep in mind the classic Boston Whalers (generally pre 2000), are smaller and lighter, and the post classics (130, 150, 170) are wider, a little longer...

Re: Looking for first boat

For your budget you can find a 170 Montauk in good shape. That will have a 4 stroke which you'll want for your first boat. For $10K -$13K (CA prices) you can find a 17 Montauk, pre-2000, but repowered with a 4 stroke. Either would be fine for two or three fishing, and could hold five people. I would...

Re: Boston Whaler models under 20 feet.

I assume you are referring to only the current line-up. The reason the small boat line up is limited and not growing is because there is little ROI/Profit Margin in those boats for a company the size of Boston Whaler. Their margins grow as the hull size grows. Of course, but as the hull size grows,...

I'm sure there's a plan, but I don't know where Boston Whaler is going with its small boat line. Couple of comments, other than welcome to the fun world of Whaler resto! The engine you have is an excellent series, quite dependable. I think it may specify 100:1, but use 50:1. I think the 3-Ampere fuse is a good suggestion. That's what Lowrance recommends, and I've never had a problem with those with the 3-Ampere inline. I haven't gauged the wire, but it's probably 10 or 12-AWG, so the capacity is larger than any fuse I'd use for the iPhone.
