fuel hose primer bulb would not stay firm


It almost sounds like the tank is not getting air so the fuel pump is sucking in the primer bulb on the fuel hose which could be caused by the air vent on tank being shut or clogged.

Thanks, there was definitely a learning curve with a few things. Having the old console to use as a template helped a lot and I was able to source mahogany close by. Thanks again everyone for the feedback.

If I were buying new, I'd get the E-TEC 30-HP. It is lightweight and should give you similar performance as your old 40. I'd call your local dealer and see what your options are in the short-shaft model.

Thanks Jim. I'll check out the shaft size on the old helm to see if the original steering wheel will fit. Will do. I'll put the old cable steering system up for sale and I'll post pics in the spring when I get the new console built and new steering system installed.

Because of the set-back (tilt/trim) bracket that I have for my outboard engine, the engine is raised enough that the cable will clear the high point of the transom. With the Evinrude E-TEC engine there is only 8-lbs difference between the 40-HP (232 lbs) and the 60-HP (240 lbs). I would go with the 60-HP E-TEC; it would be a lot better for pulling the grandchildren water skiing. Also, it would be better for re-sale.

PMaine, I have a Panther tilt and trim unit with a 1973 50 hp Evinrude and the top bolts are 1 inch from the top of the transom and I've had no problems with the transom. I use big SS washers on the inside. My boat is a 1967 13' Whaler.

It sounds like the gel coat is blistered bad on the bottom if it is chipping off. I would sand off the gel coat in the bad areas and then use a marine filler to fill any minor imperfections. I wonder what the performance difference would be between a 30 HP Etec versus a 40 HP 4-stroke (eg. Honda). It would be a shame to buy a heavy 40 HP 4-stroke to find out that the performance is similar to a 30 HP Etec.

The 30 HP ETEC would be my pick. I did notice Tohatsu 4-strokes (40 and 50 HP models) weigh 209 lbs and they have them in short shaft and long shaft.

I can see that being the case. I think the 13 pitch is the standard prop for a 2 stroke 25 Mercury. It looks like you can get a 11 or 9 pitch for that outboard. It might do the trick but you'll be changing your prop a lot.

If there are no soft spots in the hull, (bottom and floor) and the transom is still solid, I personally would proceed. I'm sure a lot of older whalers have some water in them. On a positive note, your whaler will still be way lighter than a new one. I think new hulls weighs in at 640 lbs, dry weight.
