Cooler Cleats: Teak or Mahogany

Hello All, I am getting a new pair of cooler cleats made for my 1989 MONTAUK 17. I am heading over to see the woodworker tomorrow and I am unsure if I should go with mahogany or teak for the cleats. The cost difference between teak and mahogany will not be significant in this case. The wood on the b...

Re: Split Bus Fuse Block

Good Evening. This thread is very helpful as I am planning to re-wire my 1989 Montauk 17 this summer, which I have indicated in a preview thread. I have spent the last two weeks searching the site for threads that discuss approaches to wiring the boat, and reading the many articles that Jimh has wri...

Re: Small Boat Electrical System Overhaul

Great. Thanks everyone.

I have no desire to add complexity to this rewire job. I was simply showing my ignorance of electrical systems by saying I would use circuit breakers. :)

Central power distribution panel it is.

Re: Small Boat Electrical System Overhaul

Thank you for the responses. I understand there was a lot going on in the post, so I appreciate your willingness to address those items. Thankfully, my electrician buddy works for beer and boat rides. He is a union electrician. Don - I am not sure if I need a deep cycle battery. I will not run a tro...

Small Boat Electrical System Overhaul

I want to install a VHF Marine Band radio, a chart plotter, and a SONAR, as well as an audio system. What parts will I need to do this re-wire? Should I stick with one dual purpose battery and have that run all of my electronics as well, or should I install a starter battery and a deep cycle battery...

Speaker Mounting Options

Hello. I am giddy with excitement as the days count down until I am back in New Jersey and the [MONTAUK 17] goes in the water. I have been looking into speaker for the boat. In the past I used a Jawbone speaker, but it was not loud enough when underway. I have no desire to cut holes in the console. ...

Old Cooler Cushion, New Cooler

Hello All, I've ordered a new Igloo 94qt cooler for my Montauk. The old cooler was original and was very beat up. Just wondering if anyone knows if my old cooler cushion will fit on the new 94qt cooler. The plan is to get a new cushion from Anderson, but I would like to hold off for a season if I ca...

Re: Radio Antenna Location on Small Center Console

Thanks again. The setup now make sense. I see why I need the mounting base. I also like the setup by Porthole. I will attempt to recreate it :) I do appreciate all of the help and advice offered here. I've gotten the bug to make the boat as nice as possible, and to kit it out like a champ. I'm sure ...

Re: Radio Antenna Location on Small Center Console

Thanks, Duane. Yes, my console rail is like that. Nice to know the mount can drop down for the cover.
What other pieces of equipment did you need to make that setup work beyond the antenna and the radio?

Many thanks.

Re: Radio Antenna Location on Small Center Console

Thank you, Jimh. I read through the articles and I do have a few questions that I hope you can answer for me. The Standard Horizon 1300 is at the top of the list for the radio. I do like the SS-2 antenna by GAM as well. I would like to use the antenna by itself, and not use the extension mast. I do ...

Radio Antenna Location on Small Center Console

Hello all. I have an 1989 Boston Whaler Montauk 17 that I bought four years ago. I have been putting work into it each year, and I am excited to work on it again this summer. I am also a bit of a novice when it comes to working with the boat. I would like to put a [fixed-mount] VHF radio on [this 17...
