Re: Classic 13: Remote Throttle-Shift Cable Length
Based on the lack of responses, I'm guessing not too many folks around here have had to re-cable their 80's-era classic 13's. In any event, if anyone cares, I've found the answer to where to get cables for smaller boats that are not too long. The answer, quoted from the fast outboarding forum: Go wi...

Classic 13: Remote Throttle-Shift Cable Length
My 1985 Sport 13 with amazing amazing, lightweight 1985 Yamaha 40-HP has finally reached the point where the throttle and shift cables need replacing. According to every source I can find, they are Teleflex CC230 xx series cables, where the xx is the length. BUT the shortest length I can find is 10-...

Re: Is a classic Montauk a good fit for me?
Aha! A "minimalist tower" :). I'm the same way. I can't tell you how many times I've towed my HEAVY Montauk the short drive from my house in Santa Barbara, to the harbor, with my 5-speed manual, 1986 Nissan Stanza 4wd Wagon (not a typo). Anyhow sounds like you know what you're up against. ...

Re: Is a classic Montauk a good fit for me?
Fishing and boating in SoCal and in the big desert reservoirs? That's me. I live in SoCal and got a Montauk with the dream of taking it to the islands. It turned out to be a fantasy... You can't just go when you want. You really have to pick your days and watch the weather carefully. It get's in the...

Re: Mercury and Yamaha Co-manufacturing of Engines
As I recall, in those days Mercury Marine was casting the block, and Yamaha was making most of the moving parts.... You mean the block on my 2000 Mercury 90hp FourStroke (the identical twin of the same-year, Yamaha F100), was cast by the bowling ball company? Gag! When Brunswick came out with their...

Re: Mercury and Yamaha Co-manufacturing of Engines
That was the "partnership" where Yamaha made the engines and Mercury bought the black paint used to turn them into Mercury engines. Yes, and the irony! I have one of those "Mercaha's" that I bought off of Brian/FISHNFF. A 2000, 90-HP. It's sooo Yamaha, that when I brought it in ...

Re: 1986 Evinrude 150
I have only old motors, bought used. The only cases where they have required any attention at all besides changing water pumps, which needs to be done on new motors too, has been if I let them sit for months (or more) without "winterizing." Now, all my motors are designs and brands well kn...

Re: Mercury 90 Fourstroke: Increasing Power
More thoughts: The jump to 115-HP from 90-HP is more than a 25-percent increase. It is unusual that this can be accomplished with a cam and an ECM calibration alone, unless the 90-HP motor is rated at a low RPM, and the 115 is rated much higher, in which case it would be possible. If both the 90-HP ...

Re: Mercury 90 Fourstroke: Increasing Power
Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but I don't think BW has ever rerated it's hulls of a given size for more horsepower, even after doubling the weight for a given length, as with the classic 13 versus the current 13. Both rated for 40hp max. These pages are full of reports from owners of current...

Re: Mercury 90 Fourstroke: Increasing Power
In today's government frame of mind, the bureaucrat that regulates the most is the bureaucrat that is serving the nation the best. Yep. The more rules your bureaucracy oversees, unenforceable or not, the bigger your staff, your budget, your status, you power your prestige, the more prominent your s...

Re: Mercury 90 Fourstroke: Increasing Power
Considering the EPA regulations that prohibit the tampering with any part of a regulated engine that can affect exhaust gas emission, it seems possible that you might not even be able to buy an ECM without demonstrating that you had the appropriate model engine for its use. Never tried such a thing...

Re: Transom weight for an old 17
I have a Yamaha-made Mercury 90 FourStroke on a newer classic (1998) smirked 17. It is a HEAVY setup, no question about it. Since I bought the boat in early 2011, I ran dual batteries stored in the center console. Recently, I took them out, and just use one battery that I put in front of the console...

OEM Stern Seat for MONTAUK
I noticed in the "Show US Your Whaler" thread, an entry from a new member, "roguewave". He has a nice and clean 1998 Montauk with a nice full-[width] aft seat that looks like it doesn't take up too much deck space. I have a [1998] Alert 17--Commercial Products version of the Mont...

This was just outside a marina on San Francisco bay, the day I test drove it, when it was still owned by CWW member Brian/FISHNFF http://s20.postimg.org/gvu8l0wst/IMG_0729.jpg [/url] This is how I use it when I have it in the hot dry desert of Lake Mead, with windshield removed http://s20.postimg.or...

Repair of Electrical Cables for Sounder
RATS! I had a mouse in the rigging tunnel of my Boston Whaler MONTAUK boat. It chewed a hole in at least one of the Baystar hydraulic lines, and it really did a number on the Garmin GPSmap transducer cable, where it was chewed clean through in at least three places. Does Garmin lubricate them with p...

Mounting threaded anchors in step pad of Classic 13?
My 1986 13 Sport came with a small trolling motor whose mount was held in place by 3 lag bolts screwed through the glass and into the foam. Since I didn't want the trolling motor, I took out the lag screws and filled the holes with bathtub caulk to keep water out. Now I took up fishing and want to m...
