I'm also wondering if an inexperienced person on a grinder risks going too deep and doing some damage.
Using a grinder disk to polish gelcoat will quickly expose the fiberglass hull.

Ship Shape TV is regularly shown in Fox Sports TV, channel 31 in west Central Fl. on Sunday afternoon or evening. I've run into it once in a while. They also have a lot of good salt water fishing shows shot in Florida and small boat testing shows on When the Rays aren't playing.

If you have to wait a couple of more days for the varnish in the crevices to dry, you must have applied the last coat too heavily. That might be the reason for the hazy finish.

I believe a flat (straight) sheerline is drawn with a curvature in a profile drawing. Drawing plans for a boat is not as straightforward as drawing house plans, which is basically straight lines drawn to a scale.

Two other important things I just though of, is make sure you grind back the old gel coat far enough, so that the mat doesn't cover it. It will not stick to gel coat. Some folks will insist on using epoxy for a repair, such as then one shown by [Taylor] Clark because epoxy is stronger than polyester...
