Can the original poster please tell us what his tow vehicle is ? That may factor into this decision. You also have to add the weight of the trailer to the weight of the boat, motor, fuel on board, gear, etc so you may be closer to 3000 pounds.

I have been using Mercury Quicksilver gear oil. I do not notice water separating from the oil. My engine gear case has a small leak. Even after the engine sat undisturbed for two months no water drained out; just milky gear oil drained out.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the girls wearing personal floatation devices on their last trip through the inlet. They were even wearing them correctly.

Up and down winter in SE Pennsylvania this year. On Saturday afternoon it was 55 degrees then I woke up Sunday morning to 3 inches of snow on the ground. My son was ice fishing three weeks ago up at lake Oneida in NY. The ice there was a foot thick. No safe ice in SE PA presently.

What lubricates the seal-to-shaft interface as the shaft spins?

For the inner seal would imagine gear oil be the lubricant?

For the outer seal would water be the lubricant?

Is the engine transom bracket sitting directly on top of the transom?

Or, is the engine mounting height raised by a few holes?

I have heard of outboard shops refusing to work on older engines beyond the typical new water pump but never heard of an outboard dealer saying your boats too old. I am glad he is not a heart surgeon.

My1987 90-HP two-stroke-power-cycle engine that has a skeg that looks just like the one in Figure 1. I think the motor operates just fine with the skeg a little shorter. If you are a perfectionist you can get it repaired. If not a perfectionist, just enjoy it as it is.

The addition of keel rollers may help you more easily load and unload the boat from the trailer if you have the rollers and bunks adjusted so that most of the weight is on the keel rollers and the bunks just provide some lateral support to prevent tipping.

You can also buy stainless steel disk brake calipers. Kodiac sells them and I have read many people swear by them for use in saltwater.
