Re: Synthetic Aids to Navigation in Great Lakes

Yes. When you receive the AToN AIS signal, effectively they are just causing your chart plotter to display a way point. That way point is not stored in your way point register. The only difference between this virtual AIS AToN and the AIS data from a vessel is that the vessel is taking GPS readings ...

Re: E-TEC 74-degree V6 Specific Fuel Consumption

For the first generation Verados, perhaps 9 worked but the estimate for the latest generation seems to get close with 10. It seems intuitive that at some point the benefit of the supercharger at lower RPM has to come with a cost at the higher RPM.

Re: E-TEC 74-degree V6 Specific Fuel Consumption

There is an old standard for a rule of thumb for estimating outboard engine fuel consumption, dating back to the days of the conventional two-cycle outboard engine with carburetors, that says the fuel consumption at full throttle in gallons-per-hour will be the horsepower divided by ten. For exampl...

Re: Synthetic Aids to Navigation in Great Lakes

I'm struggling a bit with the concept of the usefulness of the virtual/synthetic AToNs and AIS for users that do not have a navigation system with RADAR or RADAR overlay. Allow me to explain a bit further... The chart plotter shows representations of AToNs on the chart and as you move towards an ATo...

Re: E-TEC 74-degree V6 Specific Fuel Consumption

The problem with 2200 RPM is typically it falls in the transition region where the boat is getting over the bow wave and on plane. Now if they were to put the E-TEC in a car with a multi-speed transmission, they might try to gear it to run 2200 RPM at say a 60 MPH cruise speed to maximize fuel econo...

Re: Lowrance Elite 4: Glare on Screen

Interesting. I have an Elite 5 HDI on one of my boats and I also have a hard time seeing it in sunlight. Have not had this problem with another brand used in the same circumstances.

Thanks for the report. I wouldn't expect significant differences given that there are not significant differences between the old and new motors.

Re: 19' Outrage II Repower

Biggest concern for me would be weight on the transom as 490-lbs dry is a lot of weight back there. That boat was designed when a 150 weighed about 400-lbs.

Re: Evinrude E-TEC 135 H.O. Re-power for Outrage 18/19

Depending on how you use your boat, you could see your fuel and oil consumption cut by 1/3 to 1/2 as compared to your Yamaha carbureted 150 2-stroke. A 2.6L carbureted V6 150 2-stroke will consume fuel at more than 1 GPH at idle. A 2.6L E-TEC will consume about 0.2 GPH at idle. The more time you spe...

Re: 1999 Conquest 23, twin Mercury OptiMax 135-HP

I agree with Jim's wild guess. I would expect more than 2.5 and maybe up to 3.0 MPG at cruise. At low off-plane speeds the MPG will be considerably higher, in the range of 5 to 6 MPG. For a 50 mile run, I would use 2.5 MPG for fuel use calculations purposes until you know better.

Re: Evinrude E-TEC 135 H.O. Re-power for Outrage 18/19

I think it will be difficult to find a first hand account of a 135 H.O. on an Outrage 18. The 135 H.O. motors have not been offered for nearly as long as the 150s and as such are rare in actual use. I'm curious about the "starboard stern locker". I did not have such a thing on my Outrage 1...

Re: Evinrude E-TEC 135 H.O. Re-power for Outrage 18/19

I am certainly in favor of taking advantage of substantial discounts on new outboard engines. If you can get an E-TEC 135 H.O. at a significant savings compared to an E-TEC 150, I think you should take advantage of that savings. I do not think you will be missing very much performance by choosing t...

Re: Evinrude E-TEC 135 H.O. Re-power for Outrage 18/19

There is no engine mounted reservoir on any E-TEC above 90 HP. I had a 150 HP Johnson carbureted version of the 60 degree V6 E-TEC (135 to 200 HP) on my last Outrage 18. It was a great match for the Outrage 18. The 135 HO E-TEC would be a great match for the Outrage 18 and if you can get one at a go...
