While OMC used electronic ignition as early as 1971, it was not standard until 1977. So there are points under the flywheel. I would start there since you don't know how old they are. Hmmmm, I've never seen it NOT cure. It usually cures in the tube after a while. If you are in 'Bama I would assume it is very humid so it should have cured pretty quick. As much as I hate grouting it is the right way to repair old grout. Scratch out all the old stuff and re-grout.

I also use Boat Life for many things around the house and on my cars. Yes, it does take time to cure. That stuff is moisture cured. Spraying a fine mist of water will accelerate the cure.

The rectifier was replaced three times. And swapped with know good ones. Nothing changed. I think Jim nailed it- the charge coils are the problem.

I was just browsing the parts places and the 1985 separate stator charge coils that started this whole thing are now obsolete. And they had only cost $50. However the one-piece stator that the 1980 used has been replaced by a more modern assembly that IS available—for $400.

I am glad I kept my old 30hp around. My 48hp is down and I just swapped the 30hp on in it's place. My Evinrude guy said if he could locate a new 50hp it would cost $10,000.00 by the time it was rigged. And that was a big "IF".

I voted "often" because when underway I use it. Actively fishing or fighting fish I don't because I would need a ten foot lanyard. Under those circumstances I rarely exceed idle speed. A life jacket is worn at ALL times- no exceptions.

I added sulfuric battery acid I bought at Advance Auto Parts. I tossed the box but the concentration was what you would add to a new dry battery. I always thought the hydrometer measured the state of charge, not the acid concentration. Or is that the same thing?
