Boston Whaler only made two models of the 15-footer in 1980. They made the SPORT and the STRIPER. It does not appear that this boat had a console nor the pedestal seats that were in a STRIPER model.

I have seen reeds stick, especially in salt water. If you are taking the carb off, the reeds are right there. You can probably just stick a feeler gauge in the intake instead of removing the reeds.

Grinding off those [mounting ear extensions] is no big deal. Their removal does not present any structural problems. I am not sure why they even have them--nobody mounts an engine all the way down. And it is unlikely they would hold the engine on if somebody did mount an engine that low.

Just about every boat with a low transom will take on water if you just pull the throttle back.

How far trimmed-in are you when you try and get on plane?

The engine trim should be all the way in and once you get on plane you start trimming out and pulling back on the throttle in a single motion.

The seats are not cheap nor cheap to ship. I bought one years ago for my Outrage and never installed it and then had to ship it again. I personally do not care for stern seats on a boat that size, too much weight back there. If I need more than room for four, I put a couple deck chairs back there.

Ditto, those are common on older Whalers and mechanics who don't know Whalers tend to over tighten the bolts. If you take it for a ride and the drive changes trim under throttle, you probably have a rotten transom.

Pic #2 shows the wood core and that is how thick it is. You can buy clips to hold a paddle at West Marine, might be where the navigation lights are. If you do thru bolt them it would not look that bad. Use a sealant on the screws. Those hinges look good.

Personally if I was going to haul a boat that many miles it would not be on one of their Karavan trailers. I would sell it and get a custom aluminum trailer designed to tow long distances. You have not stated if it is a single or tandem axle. I am assuming tandem and again you do not need larger tires for that boat. If you are only concerned about revolutions, you can put on 24's and give it some bling.

You do not need 15" tires for a 21' boat if tandem axle. A 13 or 14 is plenty.

Lower unit could have a frozen bearing on the drive shaft but if that is the case it would usually stall going into gear like you hit bottom. Pull the plugs, put it in gear and turn the prop by hand or foot. If it will barely turn, you found your problem.

As for SPORT or SOURPUSS, this boat is not exactly either. It is an in-between hybrid . That is correct. I bought my 13' new and it was(I think) a $320 option for the wrap around railing and backrest. It is still a sport. I had the same setup on a couple of my 15's. They were still 15' Sport models...

Good point on the paint. Moeller bought out Tempo paint and I am not sure what colors they still produce. That blue gets much darker with age so I would look for period correct Evinrude light blue. BRP makes/made paint as well. The correct color is Evinrude 1971-1977 light blue. If you can only find...
