Your plan may work. Or not. Sealing everything up will buy more time. You may want to thicken up the epoxy with Colloidal Silica to fill voids. Don't forget the edges under the deck plates. Mine are bare wood. A little rot is like being a little pregnant. But you maybe able to glue it all to gather ...

I see John Ward is now CEO of Everglades.

His history at Boston Whaler makes that interesting. Ward was at a Whaler owners gathering along with a few more Whaler employees at Irish Boat Shop in Charlevoix, Michigan. They actually wanted to know what owners were thinking.

When I raised the transom on my 13' Whaler all wood laminating, fiberglass mat laminating, and faring was done with West System Epoxy. I would not waste my time with polyester resin for that type of job. Does the wood match the curve of the original transom? Hard to tell what is holding it together....

If it were me with a $10,000 budget I would be looking for classic Montauk 17 for your use. Better in choppy water but it would fit in an average garage.

Douglas fir is what I use for inexpensive outdoor wood. But I usually paint it.

If it were mine I would screw it down. Get all the silicone off and use Boat Life or 4200 caulk. Seal each screw.

The new 2018 Montauk line looks good to me. I've looked at a couple of 170 MONTAUK boats. I would want the 115-HP engine.

Have your dealer take you for a boat ride to help you decide.

How many blisters? A few or a bunch?

I would pop a couple of them to see what is inside. If they were dry in side I might ignore them. If they were wet inside I would grind the bumps off, dry, and epoxy coat the divots and paint.

Yes you should lightly sand between coats.

Read the back of the varnish can.

I put foam brushes in a ziplock sandwich bag between coats. Some times that works some times not.

I have never considered my 1987 Outrage 18 to be true self bailing. I use a mooring cover on my boat most of the time. If I get a good soaking rain or after deck washing I will open the deck plates for a few days to let the tank area dry out. I am very interested in what Whaler may have done differe...

Unfinished teak tends to be brown with a few dark streaks. Freshly sanded it will feel a little oily.

Mahogany tends to be pinkish or red. Kinda the color of Redwood.

I have seen weathered teak and mahogany that looked the same until you cut it.

All the parts listed above are teak on my 1987 Outrage 18 with the exception of the under gunwale rod holders. Mine were missing but think they were teak and teak plywood.
